On the subject of weaponry the narrower the firing arc the more damage the weaponry will do with that in mind here's a quick list:

Turrets fire in every direction but have the lowest dps
Cannons fire in a 180 degree arc
beam array has a 270 degree firing arc
dual beam array has a 90 degree firing arc
dual cannons and dual heavy cannons have a 45 degree firing arc and the highest dps

Torpedoes all have a 90 degree firing arc.

Also in ground combat unless your fighting the borg in general your best weapon to have is pulsewave weapon at close range because it will hit everything in front of you and do more damage the closer you are to the enemy.

I can a bit more in to depth about weapon types and useful crew skills to have if people want.

Cheers! That's really useful. Can't wait to stick some proper time into this over the weekend.

In terms of space combat another important thing to have is burst damage, the easiest way of having this is the beam overload skill it's available as an ensign tactical officer crew skill and it will output generally enough damage in 1 hit to get the enemy shields down so you can attack the hull with torpedoes.

Torpedoes are pretty much useless at getting shields down so don't bother firing them at any ship with it's shields up.

Just bear in mind I'm mainly a tactical office in STO so most of my experience is from flying tactical ships.

With that said in general if your playing on your own your better off in escort ships regardless of what class of officer you pick because they output massively more damage so combat doesn't last anywhere near as long.

This isn't much of an issue in the first lot of ships but as you go up the tiers space combat starts going on longer as the AI ships get more hitpoints and skills to keep them alive.

What sort of officer do I need to be to get a classic 60's or Motion Picture Enterprise?

Any. Any Federation officer can chose any ship. You're get a choice of new ship at level 10, which includes the Motion Picture Constitution class if you want it (that's what I've got right now).

Or you can wait a few months and hopefully they'll add the temporal agent content to the console version of the game.

One thing I do like is the way you can set abilities to auto-cast; makes fire-at-will spam even easier, and means I actually use grenades on the ground now.

I do love those. That's a fantastic addition for console version, as there are some powers I'd always use on starting a battle on PC that I've got auto-executing now, plus powers I forget to use like Brace for Impact I've got triggering on shields dropping.

I find the sheer jankiness of the ground stuff rather endearing, weirdly.

Yeah the way your team mates jitter and jump all over the place is amusing too, this game is stupidly addictive and it's hard to pinpoint how/why but classic trek noises go quite a way for me. I don't see much in the way of end game though, is there the equivalent of dungeons and raids as I've seen little sign of them. At the moment I'm happily playing it as a sp RPG, with a chat window on the side ;)

There's a ridiculous amount of endgame stuff. You do get introduced to some of it as you go through the missions so I won't spoil it, but there are Raid type missions, PvE Battle zones, more MMO open style maps where you'll be playing alongside others rather than your own little instance, and of course PvP if that's your thing.

Yeah, if you look at the captain rank screen you can scroll down the list and see how much you unlock at each rank. There's loads and loads of stuff.

Are the warp sounds missing for anyone else? My little ship spools up the warp drive with the familiar hum, then as it shoots off... silence.

I used to love going to warp in the PC version because of the sounds :(

That's one of those fun little bugs they managed to introduce to the PC version years after release. I guess it got ported across.

I tried this the other night but after creating my character, and then at the very start it started sliding and stuttering across the ship deck every time I stood still, I turned it off and deleted it. Maybe I should have give it more time but wasn't great first impressions and I'm a impatient fussy bastard.

I've been there (with Destiny). GET OFF MY CONSOLE YOU BROKE PIECE OF NONSENSE :p

I do thoroughly recommend it though, it's a great game when it works, which it does most of the time.

There are console patch notes for today! Get read for this because they're extensive and in-depth:

    * Resolved an issue that would result in players getting sent back to the title screen

That's it. I suppose we can hope it also fixes your issue StaffyDog, as they do like their stealth fixes at Cryptic, almost as much as they also like leaving bugs in it since release ;)

Is the broken diplomacy, and empress sela quests fixed yet?

I have no idea, as that's the sort of thing they tend to stealth fix. Saying it is fixed comes off as an admission of something having been wrong. They don't like doing that.

You can skip missions if you want so you can always come back to it, which I do recommend as Empress Sela is pretty good. You can go back to it any time once skipped though, and the main plot points (if you follow the story) will be reiterated.

It seems the weapons not firing bug for ships has been around for ages on the PC with the promise "we are fixing it" and it happens now on the ps4! Happen again today, really annoying. Worst of all a lot of the missions so far (on chapter 2 - klingon war) are just crap and I doubt they will get better.
the ground mission combat is just fucking awful. Only the ship combat is keeping me in (when its not buggy)

Don't worry, the missions get significantly better. The issue is most of the early stuff is the missions from years ago, partially refreshed. They did try to address this a little by mixing them around (the Wastelands missions are now a lot earlier) but it still leaves the best stuff until later.

The later you get, the more you get into missions developed later on that flow a bit better, are lighter on combat in places, allow for diplomatic resolutions rather than combat and just generally feel more like Star Trek. I could go into more detail but I'd be spoiling some stuff that I loved being a surprise :)

I'm loving it so far. Mainly because it's free and there's loads of content and it's Star Trek. I'm as happy as a pig in shit.

Only done the first batch of missions though, tweaked my ship a little, got my crew wearing Wrath of Khan outfits and heading off to kick the Klingons into order. Good stuff!

Yeah I've spent much more time on it then anything else since it came out, it is still in need of a bit of polish and there's plenty of things a bit crappy about it if you are coming from a polished rpg expectation, and yet it's really decent actually, fairly addictive and so far very generous for a ftp offering.

As Fawkes said it does get better especially (at least most of it) the Iconian War.With "Midnight" being one of my favourite Star Trek Online missions.Oh and also the Klingon War was a lot worse than it is now :p

This is one of the shoddiest, unpolished, glitchy, jarring gaming experiences ever.... but, im really enjoying it.

I am with you on this. The high level of jankiness and the numerous bugs and glitching should have put me right off but there is something quite compelling about it despite its many many flaws.

Yeah - it's weird, production values et al seem a bit shit, but then it does flow from bit to bit. I did chuckle though at the naff way Capt Taggart sacrificed himself. That's right out of some cheap sci-fi, but I guess is pretty Trekky. From ensign to captain in 5 Sec is also hilarious, but I guess they did that in the Star Trek reboot too!

But yeah I've enjoyed what I've done so far... (I think the first real mission...).

What are you captain names? I am Capt Matthew J Krondike of the USS Techno. I've got a dirty mustache.

@Technoishmatt except you're not a captain, you're just put in charge of the ship, not every ship in the Royal Navy for example is lead by a Captain
