They could have just warned him but the ball ladies pathetic reaction gave them no choice but to boot him out
Yep, agree with this. There was no 'attack'. Just Maradonna levels of overacting.

You do realise you can be hurt by something even when it's not done intentionally right?

I'd like to think that a ball hit at even a relatively slow speed would hurt if it hit you in the fucking throat.

But ok, sure, she faked it. Good to know who the real villain is here

From experience it is painful and debilitating getting hit in the adams apple, but I still get the impression that if this woman was in a cowboy movie she'd be the one that staggered around for 20 secs before falling over a balcony.

Agreed. And I didn't mean to imply that disqualification was unwarranted. But it wasn't deliberate, just careless.

I'm not sure "it probably didn't even hurt" after hit the ball out of annoyance and getting a line judge in the throat is an argument any tennis players should win. "She's just exaggerating" even moreso.

Can't quite believe the linejudge is getting shit for this. It wasn't a serve, no, but he still hit it relatively hard, you know, because he was pissed off. The camera angle we have of it foreshortened the distance, it was travelling. And it hit her in the throat FFS!

I can lip read, Novichok clearly says

"TRY DEMANDING TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER NOW BITCH"

Just before he purposefully thunders a rock hard tennis ball at her larynx

He's really doing himself no favours these last few months, with his anti-vax stuff and his antics at trying to set up his own tournament during lockdown.

Just watching a video of it now - no, it wasn't intentional and, no it, didn't look hard by his standards. But he's still one of the top 3 tennis players in the world, striking a ball out of anger and she's wearing a mask. Close ups of her show she's got water in her eyes and bloodshot.

    He's just becoming a grade 1 bellend.

Agreed. Some arbitrary threshold of pain required for a default which people are discussing is ridiculous. The point is: don't fucking behave like a baby when you're a professional sportsperson.

    From BBC:
He will lose all ranking points earned at the US Open and will forfeit the prize money he had won at the tournament. He could also be fined for the incident.

I assume that means just this years tournament and not historically!

    Bonkers ending to Zverev-Thiem final...

Two players trying their hardest not to win.

I'm happy that Osaka won. It might have felt a bit hollow given the top players dropping out due to Covid-19, but at least this time she wasn't booed.

I gave up on Zverev-Thiem after the first set and went to sleep, but it looks like it's still worth a watch, even knowing the result.

The current top players are amazing, but it's kind of sad how anyone else outside the big 3-4 have a chance to get to a big final since forever only with covid and smashed throats.

I think (well, hope) that more people getting a chance to be in and win a final, might give them the confidence they need to compete in finals against the holy trinity of tennis gods. Like, maybe they can get used to the pressure and not completely bottle it when Djokovic turns on machine mode.

Or maybe it will just be back to normal next year.

    @dominalien

The tennis was very poor at times. Zverev in particular lost his head completely in the 4th. The final set is worth watching though. Some incredible points in there and amazing drama as the momentum swings back and forth between the two players. Them looked completely shot by the final tie break - an Achilles injury; if it has been Wimbledon tie break rules, Zverev would've won.

Huh, I hope so. I like tennis very much, but it has been stale and boring at the very top for a long while now. I think some 3 generations of 2nd tier players have come and gone while the current top are there.

    Edit: @Mola
