    @Tomo

Thanks for practically spoiling the game there. ;-)

Huh, I hope so. I like tennis very much, but it has been stale and boring at the very top for a long while now. I think some 3 generations of 2nd tier players have come and gone while the current top are there.

    Edit: @Mola
I think the women's game is more interesting in that way, that you've got a bunch of people being competitive but not consistently dominant.

Serena got pretty close, but I don't think she's going to win another major now. It's a shame - as much as I don't really care for Serena's occasional antics, I really want someone to match (and beat) Margaret Court's record while the hateful bigot is alive to see it.

    Some amazing tennis tonight.

I’m livid with excitement there’s a competent Polish woman again, even if she did turn into a gibbering lunatic today.

Nadal is being Nadal and Djokovic Djokovic, but watching Schwarzmann was such a pleasure and Tsitsipas putting up a tremendous fight right now despite Novak being a class or two better is just a revelation.

I haven’t been this excited for any sport in years.

And all this just in time for Tsitsipas start failing spectacularly. Still, he put up a great fight.

Seriously? Nobody interested any more now that wimbleton is gone?

Pretty impressive start from Nadal, wasn't expecting it to be quite so one sided.

It's a bizarre comeback tbh. He's clearly addicted to the game. But he's never going to get near his former heights. Watching him get obliterated by Wawrinka last year was pretty grim.

Despite quarantine dramas, the Open Down Under started today.

It's a Kyrgios match tonight. I'm actually sort of looking forward to his inevitable meltdown. Not because he's grown on me (he's still a prick), but because it's almost comforting normality. Like all is right with the world.

It's an utter farce, having this tournament and tennis players and their entourages flying in from everywhere when there are 40,000 Aussies stranded abroad.

Are... are you disparaging sports? Sports are very important, I'll have you know.

Yeah, he sure is. He threatened to bottle it in the previous match, with the expected tantrums and the like, but managed to pull through.

I don't think he's going to make it through more difficult matches - he's not nearly as tough mentally as your Djokovics and Nadals - but I hope he keeps maturing.

The tournaments are always better when a home grown player gets far.

I've not watched tennis in a while and was surprised to see Evans and Norrie are actually decent. Evans was always poor whenever I watched him.

So yeah, this is the difference between him and Djokovic. Personally I think Djokovic is a bit of a prick too, but he's got mental strength that Kyrgios just does not have.

Djokovic has been in trouble plenty of times during games, but at some point he just shuts down and says "you know what, I'm not going to make mistakes anymore", and then proceeds to win. Kyrgios gets into trouble, then proceeds to start throwing his racquet, yelling at the umpire and crowd, and trying to do a fucking tweener on set point because he just doesn't care anymore. And it doesn't help him.

I'm actually kinda interested to see how (if he wins) Kyrgios does in the next round, when the city is locked down and there presumably won't be much of a crowd to watch him. He does seem the sort of player to get pumped up by the crowd, so my feeling is that he won't do well without one.

Edit: well, it's a moot point now, he didn't win. It was a pretty respectable performance, by Kyrgios standards lol. He didn't even spit at the umpire!

I was amazed at how well Kyrgios had stuff in hand for most of the match, though whenever I watch him I can't get over how much of a playground bully he is. Takes a lot of mental strength from the other guy to stand up to that I'll wager.

Anyway, yesterday brought some great games, just sitting down to catch up on this night's events. I love my weekend.

It's usually the same story. He does well, then stops doing well, then collapses in a frenzy of screaming and racquet throwing. Last night he got fixated on someone in the crowd for some reason, getting code violations for flipping them off, and just bottled it on really important points.

He'd be so much better if he could just keep his shit together.

So true. I keep hoping that he'll have a Federer style moment of clarity and get control of his emotions, then go on to demolish all in front of him. Year after year it fails to materialise. He has all the talent to be the best in the world, and keeps fucking it all up. Federer was like that when he started, but then got the right coaching or whatever, dominated his anger issues and then we all know the rest.

He's a waste of his own talent, it's frustrating to watch. Folk like Sir Andy (they're good pals apparently) have expressed the same.

He's in a bit of trouble against Zverev. Unforced errors, chucking his racquet, potentially getting broken twice in the third set.

Djokovic being Djokovic, though, I still expect him to win.

I really hope Zverev wins, mainly because Djoko is one of the most intensely dislikeable sports people going atm. Quite finely poised match currently.
