There are bass and drum equivs, but in my experience it is sooooo much more common among guitarists. Thats why finding one who knows the value of silence is so great.

/May or may not be in a band with a bunch of medical student guitarists. Talented bastards.

    Who's solo is better?

    It's pretty clear to me!

Haha. His pose is also uber-wankerish.

    Who's solo is better?

Both shit from where I'm standing. Heard much better fret-wanking before.

I have two words for all you haters of fret wankers:

    Frank. Zappa.

Zappa wasn't a fret wanker, he was a talented guitarist and composer.

Someone like Zappa could have the same technique as a FW, but a FW has only that technique and nothing else. That's the difference.

Frank Zappa was a legend, and I love his music (and originality in his writing).

    HOWEVER

Frank was one of the biggest fret wankers to ever grace the planet. I have several 10 minute+ guitar solos to prove it ;)

But the difference is that Zappa always crafted his solos with musical finesse, as the above video I linked to sort of shows. Vai bashes out a bunch of technically accurate notes and techniques, while Zappa shapes his 'wankings' with an understanding of melody and harmony and most importantly good phrasing!

Which is pretty much why I could listen to Zappa solo for hours and couldn't listen to Mr. Double Guitar for 10 seconds.

So what you're really saying is that, while Frank Zappa may be a fret wanker...

    HE'S A PRO!

    :)

Suprised no-one's mentioned Yngwie Malmsteen yet.

    Yngwie > all others.

I like some fret wankers. Petrrucci and Satriani mainly.

Is Eric Johnson a fret wanker? He is also awesome.

But then I also like Gilmour style playing.

    Depends on my mood.

Vai is a bit shit though. HELLO WE ARE NOT IN THE 80's NOW.

I'm into punk, one of the best things about it is short songs, no endless dull "musicianship" just to prove you can.

Mostly cos they can't, of course, but still... :D

You're missing out by not listening to other music. Punk is all well and good, but it really doesn't offer you the full range of musical delights.

And why is someone trying to say Frank Zappa was a fret wanker? What absolute horseshit.

Of course you have, I remember you talking about Pink Floyd or something a little while back, silly me.

I sort of agree but it also depends on who is playing and their attitude. Then there's what they are playing.
What about Eric during his heyday with the Dominoes.
Live at the Filmore and the jams and outakes from the Layla Sessions that were later released?
15 to 20 minute solos that never ever bored us because he went EVERYWHERE on that maple neck, least it sounded like he was.
And it had "melody", light and shade with subtle shifts in tempo etc etc not just blues box hammer-ons.

One of my ex-flatmates would play Steve Vai / Joe Satriani CDs incessently. I honestly class them borderline unlistenable.

Eventually I bought a CD of 'greatest drum solos' and played that to him. I think I made my point.

Aww, Satchs' music is so much better than Steve Vai's. Harsh to put them in the same league IMO.

The fact of the matter is however, David Gilmour > All. Nobody emotes the notes like that man.

I'm also a massive fan of Neil Young's playing/soloing, I know some hate it though. =/

I should add, David Gilmour's playing isn't really fret wanking, it's more of a sensual blowjob from mother nature.

I'm acutally quite proud of that surreal analogy! =)
