Flight stick the only way to play this.

    Love my X55.

Im up to Beluga now doing a 500k LS run 1 system jump for about 12-15m per hour. Its fucking boring though, an hour of watching twitch basically.

@OnlyJoeKing Nice. If only I'd waited for this. About a week and a half ago I ordered a used one for 25 from ebay. It works fine but is a bit grubby and the previous owner had been working the trigger too hard and has loosened the top panel of the stick which is a bit annoying.

I'm enjoying using that over the 360 pad I was previously using although I admit that landings were quicker and smoother on joypad.

@Doomspoon ah, I think it sold out pretty quick anyway.

Flight stick is the only way to go. It's weird at first, but you do get better at it. I've nailed the landings now.

@OnlyJoeKing yeah, ah well, I have a HOTAS now.

I have a regular flight stick that I didn't bother with as I preferred the joypad. I was using a Microsoft Sidewinder for a while in the first months of E: D but Win 7 suddenly decided to no longer support it, like the drivers were actively removed from Windows or something. It was ok on stick, I stress the ok, I bought the Thrustmaster base level stick at about 12 used it once and then just stuck with the pad.

It's only because my wired 360 pad has creep on the left stick that saw my ship rotating to the left of its own accord that had me seeking a replacement. I love the throttle control in flight and the lack of involuntary rolling the HOTAS is offering over the pad but the zero input to forward thrust on the throttle control when over a landing pad is too jumpy for my liking, hence the awkward landings. On joypad, even with the left roll annoyance I could fly in at speed, nose slightly down to the pad, vertical thrust down, throttle back and lift the nose in a fluid motion. Not so on the HOTAS, I spend about ten seconds nudging forwards and backwards, left and right until I am central to the pad and then drop. I'm not sure if I'll ever get it any smoother due to the aforementioned throttle issue.

Been looking at the New hotas one for the xbox. Looks quite good, apart from the fact it's near impossible to find.

Get the base game and the season pass if it's cheaper than the cmdr edition. It's the same thing sans a few pointless ship skins.

There is no hand holding if that's what you're getting at, but there isn't a great deal to really master beyond piloting and dogfighting skills, so it's not that insane. That's not to say there isn't more to the game, but it's the bread and butter of everything.

@ubergine I also bought this on PS4 last night. I completed most of the training missions last night and a few "transactions" in the main game.

Agree that the second training mission was a bit of a nightmare but enjoying the main game so far. It certainly doesn't hold your hand.

Can't wait to get stuck back in. Landing in space stations is immense.

Recentlly picked this up on PS4 and....I haven't got a clue what I'm doing. I failed the first mission as I got to the first beacon, and then didn't have a clue what to do next

Wow, the Training Mission is completely incomprehensible so far.
Yup, I cannot get past the combat mission. I can destroy the first enemy, but the second enemy always blitzes me.

There's so much depth to this game, it's awe inspiring - but the set-up of the game is akin to handing a car to someone who has never driven and asking them to drive from London to Edinburgh. At night. In the rain.

I think I ended up just skipping the training. Once you're out there things make a lot more sense.

I quite like flying with the controller (but then I don't have a stick, so can't really compare).

Didn't bother with the tutorials. Just check the controller mappings to see what each button does and head out and learn on the job in your Sidewinder, which is cheap to insure.

In other news, I've made my way to Colonia, because reasons. Biggest commitment since getting married! 400 jumps to go.

I'm going to be starting this soon, grabbed it in a steam sale a while back. Are the voice packs + voice attack as good as they appear to be in the youtube videos?

Also how important is a HOTAS? They look cool but are pricey and I'n not sure how well it's work sat on a bed, which is how I'd be playing.

Frontier have just upped the stakes in Elite.
The previously passive Thargoids have just started attacking the starports.

I wouldn't use a joypad if that's your thinking. Probably the single worst way to play and offers the least amount of control.

Yeah, it was tollerable with a steam pad because of the paddles.

I bought a cheap thrustmaster hotus X from Argos for 30 and it makes it so much better.

Hotas and keyboard, or even mouse and keyboard is best, even if the latter is less thrilling it's a lot more precise and fast.

I was planning on using a 360 pad to see if I got into it with thoughts of getting a cheapish hotas in January if I do. Definitely not getting one before Christmas now, delivery is to unreliable this time of year. I do have an old Cyborg Evo put away somewhere, might be worth digging out and having a mess with.
