£375?! Bloody hell, that was a fortune back then!
We had one though, and we had Elite.
Fuck that is expensive! My Dad wanted one in 84 but he couldn't afford one.
eBay has a few. -

The poor '64 wasn't built for pure maths. Still managed fairly well, mind.

And about as likely as Angelina Jolie cheating on Brad with Megan Fox and the video found its way on to the Internet...
Still, one can dream. One can dream. -

Registered 20 years agoI have always admired EVE from a distance, via word-of-mouth or reportage. Not having the necessary hardware didn't help but to be honest I don't think I could give myself up to a game that appears to require vast amounts of time and discipline.
CCP are developing an FPS/RTS hybrid - 'Dust 514' but that doesn't look to be treading on Elite's toes too much.
I'd imagine there are many other like me who would love to get back into a Cobra MKIII, mix it up online but be able to stop playing and not feel like I was missing out. Although I can see the logic of evolving Elite into an MMO, I'd like to think that a more 'traditional' approach wasn't out of the question.
Hell, as I and a number of others have mentioned, an XBLA/PSN update would be nice too. -

EVE really isn't anything like Elite. -
Yah, I agree with Whizzo. JGE is the one to watch. Eve is a role-playing game based in space, as opposed to a sandbox space game in which you can play a role (if that makes sense) -

Just had a quick look over the Jumpgate website - I can't see 'The Blue Danube' fitting in very well with that! -

It's THE sandbox game. And the only real difference to elite is that flight isn't physics based and it's not direct control (i.e. joystick) -

Then you're just following the usual noob misconception that would get you killed pretty rapidly in any combat situation except for the very worst blob fests.
Elite was about dogfighting, not selecting your enemy and clicking attack.
There is a heck of a lot of piloting skill involved trying to get as much time at optimal ranges as possible while minimising the amount of damage you take from enemy fire.
Until Apocrypha I would agree the combat with NPCs was particularly dumb though since then there have been areas of space where the AI has been particularly beefed up and presents a fairer representation of what small gang combat can be like.
/Is celebrating finally getting a second solo kill and also getting some nice gang kills yesterday
Strangely the part of the game that Eve really captures is quite how harmful a ship loss could be, dying could be pretty expensive in Elite, either before you got the escape pod or when carrying a large cargo and it is never particularly cheap in Eve. -

And there was me thinking that Elite was about the trading as well as everything else - if you want a dogfighter then buy a dogfighter, not a sandbox

Actually I'd also add that it's a shame you write off Eve DB as I think you'd really enjoy it since a core mechanic of the game for succeeding is finding new and innovative ways to profit from being a complete space bastard.
FWB has even found a darker side profiteering from other people's wars.
