Couldn't seem to find a blu ray film thread. If there is, sack the search engine. So, any recommendations to accompany my nice new telly arriving in 2 weeks? Aside from Planet Earth that is, which is a given..... |

Registered 19 years agoAnything when you liked the film!!! No point buying the disk if the content is the most boring pack of sh1t.
10 minutes into a good film and you wont even notice the quality anymore!! Bluray quality is only really noticible if you aren't actually "watching" the film. -

I've got the following and they all look glorious on my 42" LG 1080p
Casino Royale
BladeRunner - 5 disc set
Vantage Point - average thriller but looks amazing
Sweeney Todd
Planet Earth
SharkWater - Brilliant underwater shark documentary
Rambo - average but looks great
Black Hawk Down
Halloween
I had Predator but flogged it after not being that impressed with the transfer.
off the top of my head. -

Registered 16 years agoRatatouille and Cars are the very few 'oh my goodness, that looks amazing!' Blu-ray films.
Enchanted looks rather pretty all the way through too and is a good family film to boot. -

Registered 18 years agoSweet, Black Hawk Down might be a winner to start with. Or maybe Bladerunner. And naturally, I'd only go for films that I like. Was hoping that Stardust was available but apparently not yet (if ever...), just to keep the missus happy -

Very true. I always laugh at HD film reviews where the VQ gets 5/5 the film itself 2/5 and the overall mark is 4/5.
Having a pretty picture isn't a substitute for a good story. -

Anyway, enough about my wants, feel free to use this thread to recommend any BRD corkers. -

My copy is pretty awesome so no, I think you might have that wrong.

Black Hawk Down is a fucking awesome transfer, especially the flight in the choppers at the start, the fidelity of the image is stunning.
Superbad is also good.
Rocky is shit thou

I'm pretty sure there are two versions of BHD, and one is total shite, so beware. -

Registered 15 years agoCloverfield is excellent as is No Country for Old Men some really beautiful open plain shots.
Just watched the Mummy Returns last night which has an excellent transfer but man the CGI fight with the Scorpion King. It was bad CGI in standard Def but it is shocking in HD. Still the rest of the movie looks great. -

Registered 15 years agoPirates of the Caribbean 3 looked amazing. As did Beowulf, 30 Days of Night... hell, even Shoot 'Em Up looked bloody good.
Dark City I can't make my mind up about... loved the film and it looks good - but it's so stylised that it seems distracting somehow.
Shit, still haven't watched The Departed yet. -

i haven't seen Cars which is no.1 when sorted by video rating but every tv/blu-ray review now seems to include a copy of cars, supposed the stand out title for showing what a blu-ray and the tv it's playing on is capable of -

And yet it's the worst Pixar movie by far. Don't bother. Why obsess over image quality to put yourself through two hours of a shit film??
The Incredibles on VHS on a 14" black n white TV is better than Cars on Blu-Ray on a wall-sized diamond-crusted plasma. -

But yeah, I guess the Incredibles looks incredible on Blu-ray. (o/ -

Magazines are guilty of that and rating the movie higher than it deserves if it, say, has amazing extras. I mean like that makes up for the movie itself being crud! LOL
I've got well over 100 BDs now and the ones that have most impressed me in terms of audio/visuals, quality of the movie and decent extras are:
2001: A Space Odyssey (absolutely stunning for a 40 year old movie... looks like it was filmed recently)
Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Ratatouille
Cars (hey, I like the movie although I confess not on first viewing!)
Halloween (amazing given that it's 30 years old!)
Beowulf (the US version is better though as it has picture-in-picture stuff)
Blade Runner (again the 5-disc US version is the one to go for... incredible value at £22)
Casino Royale
Apocalypto (at times this movie looks almost 3D)
Dark City (great transfer and a brilliant movie too)
I, Robot (love this movie and it looks a treat on BD) -

Darren, have you watched any of the other 4 bladerunner discs? I'm currently in the middle of the 3hr docu about how the film was made, casting, writing etc. Fascinating stuff. -
