Registered 17 years agoI'm still waiting for The The Good, the Bad and the Wierd (Kang Ho Song, Byung-hun Lee new movie Trailer ) and Red Cliff (Tony Leung and directed by John Woo!), they are seriously going to be fantastic.
As for not liking Asian movies, it all depends what you watch and what you're interested in. Its usually best finding your favourite actors and sticking with them. Anything with Chinese movies - Tony Leung, Andy Lau. Korean - Kang Ho Song (one of my favourite actors), Byung-hun Lee. You're are usually safe.
Also these are worth a punt (along with the ones mentioned):
Romance & feel good movies;
Chungking Express
Colour of Sounds
Once in a Summer
In the mood for Love and 2046
Joint Security Area
Action/ Gangster movies
One night in Mongkok
The Show Must Go On
Fulltime Killer (shallow but action packed and full of western action movie references).
Hard Boiled
a Bittersweet life (mentioned already but seconded a must see).
Mad Detective
Eye in the Sky (Big Tony Leung)
Others movies
Welcome to Dongmakgol (fantastic moving korean wartime movie, usually in Zavi for £4!!)
I'm a Cyborg...but thats okay!
Address Unknown.
Theres a few worth looking at, depending on what your into. I guess if your not into your deep, emotional stories then most asian films aren't for you. If you generally like action packed movies for the west then give Fulltime Killer a spin, it might be a good starting point.

Registered 17 years agoOk, won't spin off a massive list but two films I'd highly recommend off the top of my head are Fighter in the Wind and Old Boy. Both Korean, or Corean or however you want to pronounce it. -

Registered 17 years agoTrue, there are a ton of great Chinese, Korean, Thai and Japanese films old and new. You just have to be the type that's not bothered with subtitles. -

Ah fair enough. I gotta disagree though, it was the most depressing thing I've ever seen. It literally ruined my week.

Not referring to GotF in particular with that comment - that one just got massively on my tits with the little girl's CONSTANT FUCKING "SEITA! SEITA! SEITA! SEITA!" as well as being generally rather, well, meh. I bought it after reading the absolutely massive praise it got on here, yet when it was done me and the girlf were both wearing massive O_o's.
What was melodramatic or 'out there' about Grave of the Fireflies? I didn't like it because it was just way, way too sad, but it I can't fault it for 'hammy acting' or having a crazy plot.
Titanic was sadder than that. -

Well thats debatable. You are right, its hardly a happy story. But JSA for the most part is a black comedy. Despite the way it ends and the situation it surrounds, its a feel good movie, because despite the situation they are and the way things eventually unfold, close friendship and camradery can prevail even amongst enemies. Its hard hitting, for thoughs four soldiers, the war was over and korea became whole again. So in a sense, its a feel good movie surrounded by horrific events, but thats my take on it, its a movie that leaves me smiling. Despite the tradegy. -
