Dunno if this has been mentioned or not but I've downloaded a good version of classic Mahjong called Moonlight Mahjong for 3.99.

    Really enjoying it.

If you've got young children/toddlers then you definitely should get First Words: Animals.

I can't recommend it enough. My 2 year old absolutely loves it!

Got an iPhone for Christmas and have been going a bit mental on the app store ever since. A few personal highlights:

    AroundMe
Nice free app that gets your current location and then lists different useful points of interest split into categories like Banks, Restaurants, Bars, Taxis, Hospitals (not necessarily in that order) etc. Should be pretty useful on holiday.

    Pano - £1.79
Think this has already been mentioned, but it's a pretty surprisingly effective little panoramic image stitcher. Here's one I made earlier whilst testing it out - obviously it would be more effective for landscapes and stuff.

    Twinkle
Great free Twitter client whose USP is showing you all tweets within a chosen radius. Really completely pisses all over paid-for Twitterrific as far as I can tell.

Has anyone mentioned Things yet? Looks like it could be quite useful.

It's a great little app. It can also sync wirelessly with the Mac client (there is no windows client tho).

I've used it for 3 months now, and have been very impressed.
So is this really worth it? I keep hearing about it but at 5.99 I'm a bit hesitant that it's no more than a fancy notepad? What makes it stand out?

Well for me it was the ability to sync with the Mac client (which I already had and it a fantastically lean, powerful and intuitive app) and it just works. It becomes more useful when you follow a task management guideline such as GTD - at this point it comes into its own.

It can be used as a notepad of sorts, but that isn't its focus.

Do you have a mac? If you don't then I would struggle to suggest it. Something like Remember The Milk might be for you?

I downloaded Dr. Awesome for 59p. An amusing, if repetitive game. I like how the patients are people from your address book and the fact there is a realtime time limit. If you admit a patient and don't play the game for a day - they die.

    That sounds horribly stressful!

    Has anybody tried Scramboni?

It's an excellent online word finding game, really well done. It shows you 4 or 5 characters and you have 30 seconds to get the word. The gotcha is that you are competing against anybody else online, I've had games with 30 people and come top 3 a few times. It's very addictive.

Also, I was up till 4am playing every single level on Crazy Penguin Catapult! It's not the greatest game by any stretch but it is pretty compulsive.

I've also just got Orions: Legend of Wizards, it's a card battling game similar to Magic: The Gathering. Check out the video review here for more info. I'm not sure if it's too complicated for me to play but I thought I'd give it a try.

Well, depends on your address book. If you felt particularly evil you could fill your address book full of people you don't like, and then don't play the game.

For guitar fans I suggest Guitar Toolkit. It has a tuner, metronome, full chord library and - most coolest of all - scales. One of the more expensive apps, but I've found it immensely useful when destroying songs with me and my guitar.

I'd also suggest Weightbot. Great for tracking your weight. It has a superb interface and can produce weekly/monthly/yearly charts based on the data you enter. I've found it an excellent motivator to enter my daily weigh-ins.

Hehe. I just picked it up. Quite a giggle, definitely worth 59p.

Pano is awesome. Don't mistake with Panolab, not the same thing. Camerabag is the other essential app for tarting up your iPhone shots.

While we're on the subject of iPhone photography, I've also been using Toy Camera a little bit. While probably a bit overpriced at £1.19, it's a cute little app that will take a photo and then process it to make it look a bit like it was taken with an old plastic... well, toy camera. The effect is that everything looks like it was snapped in the 70s. It's quite a cute little app but as I say, probably a bit overpriced for impulse consideration.

Edit: Ah, Cheers Owen. Just noticed that Camerabag offers similar sort of functionality and is quite a bit more comprehensive - wish I'd spotted that before Toy Camera

YES! Just realised that when I got my iPhone replaced by Apple it will have stopped Photoswap from banning my device, so I'm back on it at last! Will try not to send photos of internet porn this time. :)

I'm one of the lucky few who have still to receive a perverse reply on Photoswap. Although every other picture has 'WHERE ARE THE GIRLS?' in the info bit :)

Edge looks like potentially interesting puzzle action game. Anyone given it a go?
  • Deleted user 5 January 2009 11:58:08
    Nope. :)

Is it free? Having a clampdown on buying games for this that I play once or twice, then never again. ;)

    Anyone tried Silent Hill yet?
  • Deleted user 5 January 2009 20:36:53
It's called Silent Hill: The Escape. Probably rubbish.

Just downloaded Edge and played through the first nine levels. It's great. Levels aren't too taxing yet, controls are ok, presentation is superb. It's got an awesome, fluid, crisp retro feel and the 'thunk thunk' sound the cube makes makes it somehow very satisfying to play. Recommended.

    Wonder Radio

Great radio app. Has almost all the big local Irish radio stations as well as 5 Live and Talksport in the UK. Performance is also generally quite stable and it has a clean layout as well as GPS locator for local stations in your area. Win.

I can't find this in the app store. Has it been withdrawn?
Sorry, my bad, think it's called Wunder Radio actually. Try searching that.

Good write-up on the frontpage. People are starting to realise what decent portable gaming machines the iPhone and iPod Touch are. They excel at simple pick up and play gaming on-the-go. And the excellent impulse pricing model helps too.

is there a good legit text file reader available?

used to use rubooks on the touch and that was fantastic

edit: easy uploading to the iphone is a must btw.

am used to just ftping to it, currently trying to use syncdocs to upload comics to comiczeal and its a little slow.

    hmmm this might be handy

    anyone else tried live poker?
i think its really good (iv only started playing poker so it might actually be crap)
never have any lag, even though i have the 2g iphone.
only problem is when i start the game after closing it i always have less chips than i should, 1 time i lost like 70k of chips.
you can link it with your facebook account & can play your friends even if they dont have the iphone.
or you could just play the version thats on facebook..

It was alright. A poker game is only as fun as it's players and unfortunately people on live poker haven't got a clue how to bet properly.

lol i was probably one of the people you was playing.
even though iv never really played poker, i usually win every hand i play.
