Archive (20 at time of posting) From blurb:
In 2003, two hardcore PC gamers -- a freelance game journalist named Tom and a wargame expert/future brain surgeon named Bruce -- penned their first in a series of PC-gaming strategy columns for Computer Gaming World magazine, which continued through the publication of the April/May 2008 issue of Games for Windows: The Official Magazine.
Very amusing, as Tom nearly always wins, much to Bruce's weary unsuprise in later battles. Occasional guest appearances from Erik Wolpaw (Portal writer). Well worth a look if you know the games or not. |

Registered 15 years agoJust read the Combat Mission one. They chose a good scenario to play.
They did a good job of describing just how awesome the King Tiger tank is. T34s just can't make a dent in one unless they are right next to it. Utterly soul destroying when you get the jump on one and your rounds just bounce of the thing. Tom never used smoke, I wonder if his T34s had any, a smoke obscured tank charge would have dealt with the Tiger and the half-tracks would follow shortly. Tom played his infantry quite well though, some good ambushes. -

Tom: I notice that our pilot's name is new65532. He flies us into the side of a mountain.

Bruce : "Let the record show that Tom Chick won this game by building a 17th-century Indian white marble palace. He has out-Frenched me. Bastard!"
The IL-2 one was good too. The Sturmovik vs Stuka one was a foregone conclusion. The Sturmoviks could have just dived and run for their airfield. The Stukas just don't have the armament to kill them, they need a cockpit-shot as they don't have enough rounds to pound the plane into any state of major malfunction. Tail-gunners would have shredded anything giving chase. -

Registered 13 years agoThe WoW one is quite amusing as Bruce refuses to roleplay as Tom sinks into his role of a dwarven fisherman -

I remember reading some quality multiplayer write ups on rock, paper, shotgun but the competitive element of these ones gives it another level -

Sorry - that whole 'Sin City is the source of this style' thing annoys the fuck out of me. =) -

The 20 Day War - Galactic Civilizations 2. Written by Tom Francis (he's very good) over 20 real-life days of playing. Very amusing and made me reinstall the game.
And the presently being serialised sequel (alos available as a book in this months PC Gamer), GalCiv 2 Peace Report where Mr Francis takes on an Immense map on the new expansion and attemps a non-violent victory. -

Registered 13 years agoThe second GalCiv2 game is over, and very funny it is too.
Just found Living in Oblivion, a story of one man's lack of questing and attempting to survive in Cyrodil by earning an honest wage to pay for his food, drink and sleep (i.e. play an NPC). Quite silly -

Registered 13 years agoAlice & Kev
Welcome to the tale of Alice and Kev.
This is an experiment in playing a homeless family in The Sims 3. I created two Sims, moved them in to a place made to look like an abandoned park, removed all of their remaining money, and then attempted to help them survive without taking any job promotions or easy cash routes. It’s based on the old ‘poverty challenge’ idea from The Sims 2, but it turned out to be a lot more interesting with The Sims 3’s living neighborhood features.
I have attempted to tell my experiences with the minimum of embellishment. Everything I describe in here is something that happened in the game. What’s more, a surprising amount of the interesting things in this story were generated by just letting go and watching the Sims’ free will and personality traits take over.

Kev is the worst single father in the world. -

New one! Solium Infernum.
For just shy of a couple of months six arch-demons waged a war in hell. For just shy of a couple of weeks, four arch-demons wrote up their perspectives on the struggle. The resulting mass of writing works both as a multi-perspective narrative of a single, increasingly dramatic game, a review highlighting the game’s merits and as an extended tutorial of exactly how six newbies came to understand one of 2009’s most intriguing, subtle and just plain best games. If you’ve any interest in learning more about Solium Infernum, this is where to start. If you haven’t any interest in Solium Infernum, this will hopefully start it.
-

Neptune’s Pride
Neptune’s Pride is, in its current state, a simple space-strategy game. The aim is to conquer just 50% of the stars in the galaxy, rounded up. Each planet can be upgraded in economics, industry or science. Economics gives you money to spend on more stuff. Each level of Industry will churn out a number of space-ships every day. The total amount of science in the empire determines how quickly you can improve your ships in one of four categories – weapons, ship-speed, scanner range and jump-range. In other words, simple space-conquering. The twist is the aforementioned “slow-form”. For ships to go from one place to another can take literally hours. The idea being, you drop in a couple of times a day, give orders, and go and do something else.
The something else rapidly becomes “desperate scheming”.
-
