I thought about doing a pgce after I was made redundant once. I even did a week of shadowing an it teacher.

It made me realise that I hate children and it would be the worst possible career choice for me.

I plan on doing a School Direct course next year, I need to line some experience up for this year though.

I honestly hope shadowing a teacher isn't going to put me off, as I honestly do not have a plan B (I graduated in July).

I can echo Nick's experience, after redundancy thought 'now what? Hmmm, teaching, that's probably quite good'.... Did several weeks of shadowing/helping out in various schools, spoke to loads of teachers, etc. I even applied and was offered a place on a pgce course at Worcester, but then all my doubts kicked in and I realised my heart wasn't in it at all, that I'd end up hating it sooner or later and that most of those I spoke to already felt that way. So I forfeited my place, hopefully to someone who would make better use of it.

My other half is a primary teacher and the impression I get is that the main positive is the holiday and the main negative is the 195 days you have to be in school.

Maybe that's a bit unfair, she loves the teaching but the job is becoming more about paperwork and pointless bureaucracy and less about imaginative and inspiring teaching.

Some of the things I hear about parents expecting their little darlings to get special treatment over the other thirty in the class makes you want to bang your head against a wall.

Pretty much sums up teaching I think. I know quite a few and they love the teaching aspect but the paperwork and politics drives them mad and kills all enthusiasm they may have once had.

Paper work (to a variable degree politics) is a factor in any job these days. Don't just get paid for doing what the actual job involves these days, silly.

True, but fucked if I'd fancy marking books and doing lesson plans till 10pm every night.

Oh yeah, I'd hate to be a teacher. But if you are able to stand the company of children, then I think it's a great job. Me and Mrs Chopsen work in very different worlds, and we both inevitably end up doing a lot of work at home. It irritates me slightly that teacher think they are the only people in the world who work at home.

I think it's more the opposite that aggravates them - that the impression most people have of teachers is that they fuck off at 3.30pm every day and get 13 weeks holiday a year. A small minority might be lucky, but the majority don't. But yeah, I couldn't stand the kids, kids are cunts mainly.

They do get 13 (14, I think) weeks holiday a year, though. That cancels out *any* inconvenience of having to work until eastenders starts marking books and whatnot.

They never have to come in at weekends, they never have to work bank holidays and they get the *entire* summer off.

I know they complain all the fucking time about having to marking and lesson plans but they sure as bollocks wouldnt swap it for a traditional 9-5.

Exactly. The summer holidays alone make up for "long" hours during normal times imo. Don't forget never working over xmas/new year as well.

Having the whole summer off would be great, but imagine having to go back after six weeks off. The prospect of going back to work after just a few days off sometimes makes me want to blow my brains out.

To be fair, they probably don't spend most of the working day reading and posting on the EG forum.... :)

Sandra, is it possible that taking out payday loans could also be bad for your credit history as lenders will see you have trouble managing your general daily finances?

Student loans issued up till 1998 are written off at the age of 50.

There's some complicated legalese shenanigans though if you're already making payments and you cancel them, to the effect of you broke the rules therefore you lose the right to have your debt written off.

Depending on your age and your current earnings you may never pay a Penny, your best bet is to get everything legal and above board and apply for a deferment from the company which currently administers your loan, if your current wage is under the threshold. You'll have to do that every single year until the loan is either repaid or written off which is a nuisance but it keeps you clear of other problems.

Not that it's a competition, but that was better than Deckard's lowbrow comedy post.
