I'm after a laptop primarily for college work, however I would like it to include a graphics card so that I can play some sneaky games (like C&C3, Rome Total War, etc.) when I should be working at a reasonable speed... Maximum budget is about £450, and I've previously seen this which seems the best value for money: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=n0953503&c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&kc=productdetails~laptop_studio_15 Any better suggestions? |

Registered 16 years agoFrom PC World of all places (and yes, they are still a bunch of clueless tards so do your research before you go in there).
Acer Aspire 5740g £600 NB: There are several Acer 5740 models, I got this one)
Core i5 2.26 1066MHz FSB
4GB RAM
ATI 5470 GPU with 512MB on board (but can take up to 2GB 'hypermemory')
15.4" 500GB HDD
Seems perfect for my needs - DirectX 11, Windows 7, & not overly expensive.
Most importantly, it's for Startrek online, benchmark's later! -

Registered 16 years agoOK an update on my laptop playing Star Trek Online
On Maximum everything settings (and it's a DX11 card with no PhysX chip) 16fps
On the Recommended settings (which is one off slot under the max) I get a solid 41fps -
I bought a HP artist edition laptop recently for £700, has a dual-core AMD processor, 4gb RAM and 1gb ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card. Not sure what it can run but Half Life 2 at full settings was easy.
Thing is, I rarely use it as I own a PS3 for gaming. It's a really nice machine with Windows 7 and Vista recovery discs. Drop me a PM if interested in buying.
I just don't think I get the use out of it that such a big, powerful machine is capable of. -

I find myself urgently needing a laptop for work (like, today or tomorrow) but I have no idea what might be available to me. Dell is pretty much out (unless it's a model I can get in a store) because I couldn't wait for it to be delivered.
Any ideas? I'm thinking 15-17" screen, ideally HDMI out if possible. Probably a decent chunk of ram, HDD space not greatly important. Windows 7 professional would be useful, but I guess I can always upgrade / overwrite it at a later date.
Really appreciate any assistance, got a real shit situation here and not a lot of time to do anything about it. -

Edit - Ordering online is ok, but obviously it would need to be something available in stock on next day delivery. -
Bugger. I do have a decent spec lappy for sale, but I'm some 150 miles away. -

Registered 15 years agoThe only problem with that is I'm loathe to spend a significant chunk of cash on something which ends up being not quite right going forward. That would suck.
I haven't really started looking properly yet though so it's possible something will fit the bill that's available fast. -

Registered 12 years agoNot so much bringing this thread back to life, but adding my request to the collective consciousness of the EG forum to recommend me a decent laptop...
Going to be used for gaming (I know, desktop is better, but I move around too much).
Must have: 17" screen (preferably 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, not 1400x900)
Blu-ray (Got a decent collection going now)
The usual gaming pre requisites of a high end video card (currently running a 9600m GT and it's not cutting it anymore) as well as 500+GB of storage, 4+GB of RAM (DDR3 preferable) and a good processor (preferably over 2.5ghz, 2+ cores)
Price: I know this isn't going to be cheap. I don't mind spending £1200 to £1500 if the spec is right. Max limit is £1800.
I've looked at the Alienware M17x and I wasn't too impressed. I don't care too much about the weight or battery life, just the graphics card wasn't up to date and it was above £1800 when spec'ed. Any other suggestions? -

Yeah, I saw that thread. Thanks, but 11" screen isn't the same as a 17" screen, especially when it comes to watching blu-ray movies (if it even has a blu-ray drive)

Registered 12 years agoCheers for the recommendation. The X500 11M looks good at just under £1400. The nVidia 360m is reasonable too.
Is the 5xxx Ati series out yet on laptops or would a 5870m be completely out my price range? -

EG hive mind. I’m now looking for a Windows 10 laptop. Been looking and there’s just so many options.
Got a budget up to £1500. Not interesting in using it for gaming. I probably don’t need that powerful a machine. I’ll be putting an Oracle database (maybe) and run source control software, Jenkins, Github etc. Probably run a version on Linux on a VM. Work type stuff.
Surface looks very nice but I can probably get a LOT more for the money.
