I'll be going Surface for my next laptop. The build quality is just so impressive. And they seemed OK on the value side to me, last time I looked (definitely don't have the Apple premium). |

How about the ASUS zenbooks?
That’s what I’d probably get if money was no option and I didn’t want to game.
Or the dell xps 15. 15” laptop in a 14” shell

I bought a refurb Zenbook that arrived today. As mentioned in the musings thread. I bloody love it so far. Cost me £450 and it's in A1 condition.

EG hive mind. I’m now looking for a Windows 10 laptop. Been looking and there’s just so many options.
Got a budget up to £1500. Not interesting in using it for gaming. I probably don’t need that powerful a machine. I’ll be putting an Oracle database (maybe) and run source control software, Jenkins, Github etc. Probably run a version on Linux on a VM. Work type stuff.
Surface looks very nice but I can probably get a LOT more for the money.
I'd definitely look at the dell XPS range, The top tier Lenovo yoga pro and as mentioned the zenbooks are both swish.
You definitely dont need a budget of that much though if it's non gaming. 1K will net you a quality one. All depends on portability, spec etc. -

Is this any good?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B06VVXNX5Z/ref=psdcmw_429886031_t1_B071V81Y89
I just need a cheapish laptop for web browsing and video watching. I know the resolution isn't brilliant, but I figure that matters less on a smaller screen.
If you think it's shite, can you point me at something better for similar money. Thanks. -

Funnily enough I'm thinking of getting a laptop and was looking at the same one. It seems to review very well.

Registered 16 years agoThe only issue i'd have with it is the resolution. I find anything less than 1080p a fucking PITA to multitask with sometimes. -
Yeah I'd have to agree. Would go with at least 900p for that screen size. -

Registered 12 years agoI think 1080p should be the minimum for any screen these days. Anything less feels cramped to me. If you're OK with less at least the battery life should be marginally better.
That laptop looks decent otherwise though and has an SSD which is the main thing.
Have you considered an iPad if literally all you're doing is web browsing and video watching? Granted they're more locked down, if that's an issue, but otherwise you'll be getting a far better screen, better portability, and access to all the stuff on the App store. -
The other thing I was looking at is this:
https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/refurbished-lenovo-yoga-520-pentium-gold-4415u-4gb-128gb-ssd-14-windows-10-a1-80x800s4uk/version.asp
Not as powerful, but it doesn't really need to be. It is however slightly cheaper and full hd. -
And it just went out of stock.

4gig of ram annoyingly. But possibly upgradable -
I've used xsonly a few times now so highly recommend them for quality refurbs. Bought a zenbook off them a few months ago for £400 and it's great.
https://www.xsonly.com -
Went for one of these in the end.
https://www.blackmoreit.com/be-dell-latitude-e7240--i5-cpu--4gb-ram--128gb-ssd--12-touchscreen-laptop.html
Costs £206 by the time you've added windows 10 and an extra 4gb of ram. -
So it's arrived, and I have to say, it's rather nice. A few scuffs and whatnot, and slightly heavier than I was expecting but for a 4 year old or so refurb it's in excellent nick. It's also pretty quick, and for what I need it for it looks to be more than up to the job.
I would say that the only thing I'm not sold on is the reflectiveness of the screen which would make a pretty good mirror. I might upgrade Mrs Hermit to one as her laptop is so old and crap that it's almost worse than having no laptop at all. -

Registered 17 years agoI preordered a Razer laptop from Amazon in June and not only am I still waiting for it, but Razer can't even tell me when it will be back in stock. They should really avoid talking about things they can't make. -

Registered 15 years agoQuick question...
Looking at benchmarks it appears that the i3 in one laptop I'm looking at is quite a bit more powerful than the i5 I'm looking at in another laptop (refurb). Anything else I should be aware of for i3 vs i5?
Machine will never be used for gaming, but will be used for movies. -

I'm after a lap top with full size keyboard(not note book) for daughters Xmas pressie. I really now fuck all about them so thought I would ask you lot on here
She is 12, so it is mainly for Homework (we want to get her some Graphic design software) and pin interest! She already has an ipad and iphone but no way am I buying an apple. Needs to be ready to go from the off.
I was thinking top budget of £400, can I get anything half descent for that ? if you know any deals could you link please. I use Amazon a lot so if it was from them, that would be good.
Cheers in advance. -
Don't know how careful your daughter is with things but I've heard a lot of schools like Lenovo because of the general robust build. Would something like this work for you?

LENOVO IdeaPad 330-15ARR, AMD Ryzen 3, 8GB RAM, 2TB HDD, 15.6" Full HD
for £379.
Kinda tempted myself but might wait for actual BF to kick in and look around. -

I'm in the market for a Chromebook. I've got a beefy gaming laptop but I need something more lighter and portable for non gaming use.
Just wondered if anyone had this:
Acer Chromebook R13 CB5 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MEH09CD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uhVmDb62QQK3D
Refurb prices are around £200. It appears to show up on the usual 'best of' lists.
