Quality rant smoothpete. The 5D MkII's video quality is good alright, but I'm guessing an SLR camera is missing too much specialised functionality to be of use to most professional video production companies. No motorised zoom, no frame-rate options, basic audio recording and connectivity, unsuitable ergonomics, unwieldly focus and image control behaviour, etc. See [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBRaUcmXdWE">here for an example of what an SD camcorder for around the same price can do. What the D90 and 5D MkII should do is force video camera manufacturers to make more inexpensvie, better-quailty devices. Full convergence between still and motion cameras is obviously unnecessary for most professionals. What's odd about the situation, as pointed out by that |

Registered 18 years agoIt's going to be absolutely perfect for us as far as I can tell. We don't have lighting or the knowledge to use it, so I'm assuming we will get away with natural light indoors at high ISO, and be able to play around with the wide range of lenses we have. We intend to put 2 and a half thousand cocktails online, being made and prepared - and I'm hoping this will enable us to do it without any external help or costs. -

Registered 17 years agoI watched that video at home, it's really very impressive indeed.
I have a few questions about image stabilization and things. If your lens in non-IS, is there anything built into the camera to help? I would imagine that you'd need a steadycam rig to do any kind of tracking shots. -

Is that not just sales talk? I really doubt something designed to be a still camera can produce such good film.

Bloody hell.
That is impressive. Not sure I'll be sticking my camera on the bonnet of my car though. Bit noisy when he pans across NY from the helicopter but still impressive. I liked the fact that the credits roll almost as long as the film. Got to love film makers and their credits. -

Registered 17 years agoAlso how does autofocus work? Autofocus would look unnatural actually, you'd need to do manual. But if you had to do manual, you'd need one of those old school SLR focussing screens. I guess. -

Registered 16 years agoAll that video shows is how good the quality is, for all we know the film maker could have been going blue in the face setting up each shot. Will be interesting to read how easy (or not) it is to use. -

Registered 20 years agoThe making of video was interesting when you see the difference in low light image quality between the 5DII and the vid cam capturing the behind the scenes stuff.
Been really impressed by what has been put up on the web so far about the 5D. Didn't think the video would be anything like as good or as usable as this!
But it is going to need some decent lenses
to get the best of it...
Oh well. -

Registered 15 years agoWhen Laforet replied to somebody in his blog he said IS does not work in a helicopter anyway.
The body does not have IS and autofocus does not work, you really do not want autofocus anyway.
Awesome video though, one of my friends is planning to sell lots of stuff to finance the purchase. -

And then I think your budget would allow for slightly more dedicated kit... -

the american price is without sales tax as it varies from state to state but even taking that into account the price is still far higher in the uk -

Registered 16 years agoI've had a sniff around and the cheapest UK price I can find is £1799, which is pretty good. A company called RGB-tech, never heard of them. Dabs.com have it at £1959.
I doubt many people will be willing or will have to pay the full £2200. -

Registered 16 years agoLooks like 3rd December is the UK release date for this. Well that's when Park Cameras have offered me to attend their "truly unique" launch event anyway.
More bollocks from the invite...
"A camera of such magnitude deserves an event to match and we feel we have exactly what is required"
"At just £15 to attend one of the talks we hope you share in our belief that this is truly not a day to be missed"
"It's not just a camera, it's the new messiah." -

gasp, I've bought one. I've been watching the price for a couple of weeks and it is slowly increasing and I decided to take the plunge.
I found it for a good price and took a (slightly risky) punt for it. I've never heard of the shop before, but I paid by VISA credit so should be protected.
