It just depressing that the film industry is just rebooting everything. Just let things be. Ghostbusters and Indy are timeless. We already had one modern Indy film and it was mostly naff. Saying that I think Chris Pratt has Indy could work, and a female lead for ghostbusters is interesting because it stops a male cast having to emulate the previous roles which cinema goers will expect. I don't know how the new dads army film will handle all those famous catchphrases and mannerisms. |

Actually, it's telling that the sexism angle didn't even occur to me. I accepted that a female cast was an entirely valid and normal thing to potentially happen in a reboot and people were just reacting qualitatively.
Again, not accusing every single one of you of sexism. At the same time it seems a little obtuse to completely deny it's a factor in the general reaction.
See also the gender switch of Starbuck in BSG.
Perhaps 'tis YOU that has the problem?!

Registered 15 years agoGhostbusters is great, so I'm happy to have another entry. Shame it's rebooting rather than just being set in same universe, but can't wait.
Can't be worse than Ghostbusters 2 anyway

Registered 7 years agoI'm in no way, shape or form racist. But the sceptic in me wonders if the hamfisted Hollywood that is seeminly unable to produce anything outside remakes and sequels decided to cast the black lady just to make it a bit familiar because of Ernie Hudson in the original lineup?
I don't even know why this has to be under the guise of 'Ghostbusters'?
Feig’s take on the property is said to be targeting a scarier tone that will not maintain any continuity with the original film or its 1989 sequel
Same way that AC4 shouldn't have been an AC game. Just bone fucking idol. -

Registered 8 years agoTell you what 80s are a gold mine of treasures when it comes down to film franchises.
Which makes me think why it so hard for Hollywood to deliver franchises in the same way now? Too marketed and audience tick boxed?
Interesting that boxtrolls was almost canned because it was to dark and grungy for kids. But turned out as one of the biggest films of year financially and critically. -

Sexist pig. Saying that it won't work without Bill Murray - a man - how dare you good sir.
Gus wrote:
Yep. Definitely. No reason it can't work with women, but with no Bill Murray it'll be wank.
Would people be saying it's going to be shit if the likes of Seth Rogan, James Franco and co had been cast? -
It'll be a failure but a more interesting one with a female cast.
I seriously wish they would just leave alone.
This from my other half though who is a woman. 'Woman just aren't as funny as men.' Conditioned to think that or genuine point? Or maybe women haven't traditionally had the same chances in comedy as men because being anything other than meat isn't appealing to a male audience or what females aspire to be?

Registered 15 years agoI don't tend to find female stand ups that funny, never sure why.
Although I love Kirsten Wiig and I'm a big fan of Bridesmaids.
The film isn't too bad either. -
Kirsten Wiig is funny (especially on SNL), other female comedians, not so much.
edit: That's not a dig at the 'women aren't as funny as guys' stereotype btw, I just can't think of any female comedians that make me chuckle.

And there are plenty of people that know the next Indy will be shit. And, when KOTCS was announced there were plenty of people worried it was going to be shit too. -
'Women aren't as funny as men' should self-evidently be total horseshit, without recourse to culture at all. -

So pretty much any female from 30 Rock and Parks and Rec. -
Oh yeah Tina Fey. 30 Rock is awesome. Also have a massive crush on her.

Please. The whole narrative around this film is - ALL FEMALE CAST. Whether that bothers you individually or not, let's not pretend it's not a factor in the reaction (which it was always intended to be).

You can argue the move itself is cynical and actually in itself quite sexist, or you can argue it's hugely feminist. Wither way, it's valid and quite interesting I think to discuss it. -
Miranda. -
I'm so fucking sick of talking about sexism. Jesus! (he was a man, I'll mention a woman to balance it out - Jenna Jameson) -

Registered 16 years agoIf they made it with Tina Fey, Aubrey Plaza and Kaitlin Olson I'd be delighted. I would also say Amy Poehler but maybe that's too 'familiar' with the other actresses. -
Gutted that Murray isn't in it but it'd all be a bit Charlie's Angels if he was.
Personally looking forward to an all-female cast reboot much more than a bunch of dudes producing a poor imitation of the classics. -

While it is interesting that it is all female lead cast to your point, the main gist of this thread is not "ghostbusters 3 will be shit because it is all female lead" - if you think it is then you are reaching.

While it is an item of note, the main gist of this thread is this will be utterly shit because all remakes and sequels of massive hits from this era have been utterly shit / majorly disappointing.
If anything the negative Indy reaction already occurred with film 4, so now is already fucked for many - hence more apathy in the Indy thread. GB remains one that is not ruined (until next year).
Fuck all to do with sexism. -

Registered 17 years ago"Ghostbusters 3 will be shit because of who they've cast"?
I've seen the trailer for Spy, which is the latest Melissa McCarthy vehicle and it's Paul Feig directing again. Dear god, it's looks fucking terrible.
The cast may work well with each other which is why perhaps he chose them.

Registered 15 years agoYeah watched the spy trailer last night, laughed a couple of times (Jude Law sneezing at the start) but once the initial 30 second amusement was gone it looked very average.
I do like McCarthy (Melissa, not Senator) but Wiig is the bigger draw for me. -
I keep pretending this isn't being made then I see some piece of news, like the cast list.
Please can they release this on the quiet and it be forgotten about
I'm in the camp it is an all female cast for marketing purposes to create an artificial USP. This movie is being made for financial purposes nothing else.

As opposed to the movies made because someone had an idea, vision, creative thought, message etc and yes Comedies can have creativity. -
Ghostbusters 3 won't be a comedy if it has an all-female cast.
