@Mola_Ram well lets say i fall somewhere between my arguments then. i dont believe every 5 star rating is based purely on their own opinion and doesnt take into account sponsorships, exclusive interviews etc.. its free advertising for your paper or site if you blow up a films arse hole and get your scores and hyperbowl quotes onto their marketing campaigns. Theres been enough instances of films (and games) being hyped and getting top marks only to be shite to make me doubt theyre all telling the truth. Then they started using "real people" coming out of the cinema having just watched it to get quotes from... each moron desperate to be on tv if they seem excited enough so they all spew out cliches. "best movie ive seen all year" says some 14 year old with his mum. "feel good movie of the summer" says 2 girls i wouldn't even trust to make a pot noodle! im at the point now where their words just wash over me and instead of making me go "wow another 5 star films!! i must watch that" i just think "ill check out a video and see if it interests me". |

I think it was fair enough to say it looked bad from the trailers (which mostly looked like Pixels with ghosts), but I went in hoping it would be alright, and while it wasn't amazing, I had a lot of fun watching it
Think watching the original Ghostbusters again the week before helped, reminded me not to take all the drama surrounding the film too seriously -

Registered 16 years agoWhile I dont doubt there is a certain amount of that going on, they cant hit everyone and the general consensus does seem to drown the shills out and settle on a reasonably correct verdict.
For example, the paid for reviews and hand picked quotes for Batman Vs Superman came out of the blocks really early, declaring it a triumph. That was *immediately* cancelled out by the rest of the world correctly identifying that its a steaming heap of shit.
And Im sure its the same with this. All the PR maneuvering in the world cant cancel out a million moderately positive voices -

Registered 9 years agoLike I said, there are definitely shills and quote whores about. But that's no reason to paint the whole profession with the same brush.
Ideally, of course, people wouldn't just look at a quote and go "wow, 5 stars, I gotta see that!". Ideally, they would want to actually read the thing, to see why the guy gave it that score. -

Registered 13 years agoyeah i agree.. though we'll have to watch ourselves talking about reviews and actually reading them. or it'll end up kicking off that thread again over eurogamers no scores lol -

Registered 8 years agoIt's a shame all this noise is only about an enjoyable piece of fluff and films deserving of in-depth discussion seem to pass by the wayside.
I mean, I'm a fan, but now it's out it has to be said it didn't deserve any, if not all, of the shit flung at it outside of criticisms of the resoundingly poor trailers. The hate campaign against it is staggering, no doubt attracting people from MRA's, GB original lovers with a huge sense of entitlement and people just bandwagon jumping for the lulz.
For the middle ground, I thought Double Toasted had a by and large good review of it and Mark Kermode. -
Just saw this. It was ok. Cameos were dire but I have no idea why anyone would get worked up over it. It didn't ruin my childhood.
Then again I saw a trailer for Magnificent Seven the reboot before this and was PISSED OFF. -

Registered 8 years agoThat was already remade. Battle Beyond The Stars!
Plus it had three sequels and a TV series.
See, I've no idea why people get worked up by franchise-film reboots.

I'm not anti-cowboy, but if the characters in the original were samurai, not sure why it needs to change. Its just pandering to the cowboy market for the sake of equality.

Registered 9 years agoVenkman was portayed as happy to abuse his position to get laid. And they called that man dickless, but when it was on ITV they called him Wallywick instead. It is no wonder the world has gone to hell in a hand basket. -

Try explaining the ghost blow job scene to an 8 year old then. Or the various comments when Venkman visits Dana when she's possessed. Just those two (plus worries about nightmares from the dogs) gave me pause when i thought about letting my eldest see it the other week.
Not really
I'm no prude, but it's definitely a film for slightly older kids. -

Registered 8 years agoIt's not really a film for kids in the same way that Airplane isn't really a film for kids. They're mainstream comedies.
There's a load of swearing in the first too. "I've seen shit that'd turn you white" etc. It's just that back then our parents didn't really give too much of a crap what we saw, or we caught it on TV during the Mary Whitehouse days.
@drhickman1983 yes! One of the best reboots ever, another example of why reboots don't necessarily have to be crap. -
