Registered 16 years agoYou'd be amazed. My wife is in a mumchat group who were worried about their boys going up to secondary school and not being able to tie their own laces.
They were coming up with all kinds of strategies to get around it, like those self tying laces, the springy ones or doing them double knots in the morning rather than, I dunno, TEACHING THEM TO TIE THEIR FUCKING SHOELACES.
Tldr: if that woman has hit 22 without learning that basic life skill, it's actually the mums fault. -

Registered 16 years agoSomewhat hypocritically, we worked out that since she started secondary school, my daughter has worn a tie more times in her life than me and is better at tying one. -

I'm quite proud of The Boy - he's really got the hand of getting the train to school via two different train routes, and getting home and getting the bus and remembering to get off at the right stop!
Might not sounds much, but I never did anything like that at 11.
Edit - sorry, your mention of a tie got me to thinking that he now has to wear one everyday and does a decent job of tying it.

Registered 8 years agoPeople send their kids to primary school not toilet trained, so older kids not being able to do laces and ties isn't all that shocking.
You should need a licence to have fucking kids. -

Registered 5 years agoProperly tying a tie here seems to be considered some weird voodoo. I was putting a tie on in my office once and a co worker thought it was some amazing talent that only few men have ever mastered.
Seems to be a case of either wear clip ons or have someone else tie it for you. -

Nah. Our primary and senior school didn’t have uniforms, I went to scumbag college rather than a sixth form and I can wear what I like at work. I only wear a tie for funerals and interviews.
Did you not wear a tie to school?
It’s basically the reason I’m so anti-school uniform. Kids have stricter dress code than 90% of adults in the workplace. It’s absolutely retarded.

The next part of the conversation was that the girl is in medical school. Let's hope she doesn't want to be a vascular surgeon! Or do any vasectomies.

Also people who lack any kind of common sense or general knowledge can be very successful doctors... I give you Dr Ben Carson.

Registered 18 years agoThat is absolutely remarkable. I was going to be charitable and suggest perhaps she had additional needs (my 6 year can't manage buttons as she doesn't have great motor control) but seems not. -

Well yeah, I have mate who's wife is a doctor and as she says it's not about being smart it's just about remembering shit. Or the 4 GPS who were adamant that my testicular cancer was an STI and were against a scan as they didn't want to waste the hospital's time.

Registered 16 years agoWay back in the mists of time, I did two summers during my uni years doing tech-support and admin in a GP surgery. You probably do have to be clever to be a doctor, but being a complete loon is absolutely no bar. -

Today is so infuriating. A stupid ambulance stopped in front of the bus. We had to wait like 10 minutes. What a waste of my time.
