Ironically, WT events are mostly an offline thing because the server WT was always biased a little way towards white and you averaged to it on login, so unless you stayed logged in on a single session it was hard to get to pure WT either way.
World Tendency events were the only online feature I valued. Ghosts and messages I'm indifferent to, they're an interesting concept but not something that added much to the game for me.
World tendency though, having the World shift to pure black, black phantoms coming out of the woodwork. That made things interesting... Dangerous, but think of the loot they carry. I set out to kill them all.
Changing DNS settings is more than worth it to get World tendency events back again.
Bloodstains have always been the best online feature of Souls though. Just that little thing that says "yep, everyone else is dying just like you" is enough. -
I preferred the days of DS before password matching when you were forced to match with complete randoms. They were such lonely games that having someone, anyone come in to help was such a relief. Even if on the odd occasion you had a choice and browsed the signs looking for the meanest looking dude.
Now that I've rinsed them clean though I'm happy just to buddy up and stomp through them like Rambo. -

Having World tendency sometimes shift server side was extremely useful though since the game limited opportunities to shift white and you only had the suicide method to shift black. Suddenly shifting to pure black everywhere was an interesting event, since most of us wouldn't have seen Demon's Souls in that state prior to that.

In general, most online interactions in games are snake oil, a con. Ghosts and messages could be handled offline, do you think messages written by a 'professional' would be worse? Will XXXL33TsNiP3RXXX joining your game or writing you messages enhance your game in some way that a scripted character wouldn't?
Demon's Souls would have been a better game with all the online components stripped out and the mechanics for influencing large World tendency shifts put in the hands of the player. Furthermore we wouldn't have the hassle of the game losing a chunk of it's functionality when the servers close.
