Rewatched that DS9 episode "Hippocratic Oath" yesterday. Starts as a good character episode, but how O'Brien becomes a murderer and nobody seems to mind afterwards makes this one of the worst moments in DS9

Discipline in Starfleet is all over the place in one DS9 episode Worf throws a big fragile masculine tantrum, joins a terrorist cell and tries to destroy Risa because he's grumpy about his girlfriend having fun without him.

And Sisko destroys all life on a planet to prove a point to Eddington

I think that one's debatable, as Tuvix is a merger of two other characters, and what she does is essentially split them up again. Tuvok and Neelix live on and both have the memories of Tuvix, it seems. He's not actually dead, his combined personality is redistributed to two characters again. I'm not saying this point of view is the correct one, just that I think it's complex and debatable.

I have more trouble with Janeway trying to actually murder a prisoner in a later episode for not giving her the information she demands, with no ambiguity whatsoever. However, Voyager being the worst reset button culprit, you just know it will be completely forgotten after the end of the episode.

He is literally begging for his life as Janeway marches him to his death against the wishes of the rest of the crew. You monster Dr Strangelove.

Maturity is to know when murder is appropriate and when it's not

Anyone watch the Red Letter Media re-review of the first Star Trek film? I kinda really wanna watch it again, which I never really expected(don't think I've watched it in about 25 years). Good looking movie too.

Yeah, I watched it. Weirdly, I seem to catch ST:TMP on TV relatively often and almost always end up watching it because they *really* don't make them like this anymore.

Even amongst the scenery porn, there's one scene where Kirk's being chauffeured on a shuttle to the new enterprise which goes on for like an hour but it's just so soothing.

@nickthegun the earlier TOS movies are probably the best looking of all of the treks for me. Fully agree on the scenery porn.

Voyager rewatch never really took off but I have just finished Season 1

Was there a writers strike or something? It just seems to stop after a short number of episodes with a total midseasoner

The crew are growing on me and there's generally more conflict between the two crews than I remembered from watching it live

Any of the books any good? Know it's a TV thread, but didn't feel like creating a separate thread. Am reading Rogue, just started but seems quite good. Nice to be in the trek universe again.

I've read a bunch of the books, there's a reading list order up somewhere online. I'd say the Destiny trilogy is fantastic, and the Voyager relaunch with Kirsten Beyer are great too.

Most of the other stuff has been fair to shite.

    The books are all shit.

They're set between episodes so every single one jumps the shark in terms of heroics and stretching plausibility and then smashes the reset button to do it all over again in the next book in the ~3 days remaining between the last book and the next episode.

    They're pretty much pointless.

One is supposed to be good by Andrew Robinson if I recall about Garrick. A stitch of something.

This couldn't be more wrong now. They relaunched all the books, they're set post-Nemesis/DS9/Voyager etc. They tell large stories that span each series, and often they crossover with each other.

No reset button to stop continuity errors anymore. Doesn't stop most of them from being pretty average, but like I said above, the Destiny trilogy deals with a massive Borg war and is really great. And the Voyager relaunch stuff is fantastic.

Watched it and couldn't believe my luck when I found it on Amazon prime afterwards, it's great and truly unique! Those RLM boys really do Trek justice!

Watched it now. Reminded me of how and why TMP is the best Star Trek movie.

If there's ever a cinema showing of TMP in London at the Prince Charles or something, we should do a geek meet....TMP and a Chinatown?

Watched the three Short Treks last night. 15 minutes each and not brilliant, but not bad either. Saru's origin ep was the highlight.

Odd that they haven't so far and it makes me wonder if they will. Anyway, worth ripping for the Saru episode and the Black Mirror lite episode.

Yeah, those two episodes are the ones that I like the sound of. I'll grab them from the interwebs at some point if they're not up soon.
