Haha Kirk's rap battle with V'Ger is the best part of the Motion Picture!

Looks like new Trek movie has been shelved. Chris Pine/Hemsworth left over salary disputes and director has joined Game of Thrones prequel show to direct pilot/produce.

To be honest I wasn't a massive fan of the Kelvin films. The first one was a decent reboot but the second double-downed on the parts I didn't like, namely non-stop action. Third was ok but just pretty boring.

A bit of a shame as the Enterprise-A looked a bit less like a fucking abomination. But that's no reason to carry on, it's just a set.

As for Tarantino, I never thought it looked likely. Probably just going to forever be a 'what if?'

Thanks for bringing Star Trek back to the mainstream though. I'm not going to miss punchy, angry spock (completely awful what they did to that character), generic kirk, scotty mcpegg or any of JJ's artistic choices. Urban was good though. Shame he got all of 30 minutes of scenes across the three films.

    To the brig!

@Jyzzy-Z Yeah, I wonder if Nu-Trek's greatest contribution was making it mainstream(y) again. It's probably thanks (at least in part) to the success of the new films that we've got Trek back on TV again.

I'm enjoying the reevaluation that TMP is getting by fans and critics at the minute.

It's a bloody gorgeous looking film and a noble failure.

I doubt people will be talking about Into Derpness in 30 years time.
  • Deleted user 14 January 2019 12:19:05
@CosmicFuzz Yeah I'm happy for that, even if DSC isn't my thing. Got to keep it going.

I would liked to have seen where Nu-Trek 4 went though. Beyond was a step in the right direction IMO. I'd have been interested to see if they went back to the dumb OTT action of the first two films to try and get a bigger box office, or they carried on down the more considered route (though with a lot of action still).

I'm sure it could still happen. They'll just have to recast or cough up for Pine.

Finished DS9 season 5 yesterday, best season of Trek yet and S6 so far looks like it'll be at least as good. It's unbelievable the dull shit that was Voyager was running concurrently.

I always like The Motion Picture. I think I could very easily talk myself into saying that TOS movies might be my favourite version of Trek.

I certainly headcanon TNG as a sequel to them rather than TOS itself.

The Klingons certainly are. However a lot of TNG season 1 episodes feel like bad copies of TOS TV episodes.

Section 31 spin off announced for All Access with Michelle Yeoh. This Star Trek thing is really doing poorly... ;)

I didn't think Yeoh was that good myself, but I'm up for a black ops spy show set in the Trek universe. If it's anything like David Mack's books it'll be fun.

They're certainly ensuring that there's something for everyone with these spin offs. Hopefully that's the way to avoid franchise fatigue like last time.

    Yay. Another prequel based show.

I've always thought that TOS is kinda wank a lot of the time. I've always like TMP, it's hypnotic and V'Ger is a great concept.

Except that the basic idea for V'Ger was stolen from Nomad in a TOS TV episode.

But I agree, TMP always was my favourite Trek movie.

I hate prequels but I really don't consider this to be one as such. It's so different, it's barely even star trek anymore.

But, yeah, it's really annoying that we have had, basically, nothing post-dominion war.

Post-Dominion War or high concept would be my ideal

Or something about maybe a freelancer or frontiersmen not part of the federation

Going forward also immediately mitigates the 'it's set before [time period X] but it looks more advanced than [time period Y]' complaint.

After watching the shorts (which I quite liked, especially the Mudd one) I watched the first couple of episodes of season 1 again to see if it was as monotonous as I recalled (it wasn't) and was highly amused to hear that the admiral was called Brett Anderson:) Now I'm wondering if there is an admiral Jarvis Cocker or Ian Brown out there somewhere...

It's funny after watching Death of Stalin' and how brilliant Isaacs was in that it made me want to rewatch season one again! His character in Death of Stalin' would have made a great captain too!

Runaway could easily have been a full length episode of TNG, DS9 or VOY

Calypso almost like the more optimistic episodes of Black Mirror. Absolutely marvellous.

Will watch the other two tomorrow but I'm pretty much convinced that an anthology series of Trek shorts like these would be an excellent idea.

Couldn't help but watch the other two.

Brightest Star worst of the bunch, felt like a flashback sequence cut from a longer episode. Probably one where he's been captured and the prisoners are bonding over their origin stories

The Mudd one lots of fun, love the way the stories repeat before the big reveal.

Gimme that anthology series now boys

Wow yes, Iím about to finish the second of the shorts and they really are impressive. This second one especially is rather beautiful.
  • Deleted user 18 January 2019 11:49:44
What's the verdict on episode 1 then?

Loads of fan service and explosions?

Even a hint of sci-fi in it apart from the sets and CGI?

Fan service, Star Wars-style space flyer thingy stuff, not a lot of sci-fi, a few nice character moments but otherwise nothing of interest happening. I think it didn't have really awful scenes like most of season 1 though, which is a start.

    Verdict on episode 1.

I thought it was really good. Almost everyone is a self proclaimed informed and ultra insighful critic on here so I won't bother doing a breakdown of pros and cons.

I enjoyed it. Thumbs in an upwards direction.
