With CBS and Viacom remerging, I wonder if we’ll see any differences to how the the Trek movies / shows are made or if the licensing ‘issues’ were all just a red herring.

I was wondering that. I was kinda hoping that it may explain why I don't like Discovery and potentially the upcoming Picard, but will see. Hope the remerger fixes it all.

I always thought that the whole break up of the rights effecting the content of the shows/movies was bullshit.

Why would you let rights effect the content of the show beyond visuals?

It's great to see Riker, Troi and Picard again. But my confidence levels that they'll pull it off are rock bottom. Mostly the segment with 7, looked like she was in a computer game.

Discovery has set the bar so low that it can't possibly be any worse. So I'm optimistic.

My worry is that the Picard series won't be able to shake free of fan service and it's connection to TNG. That it'll fall between stools and satisfy no one.

Whereas Discovery was mostly free to be its own thing.

Entire second season had Pike and Spock and Enterprise so not sure about that.

If Kurtzman is heavily involved in Picard it'll be poor.

    @Joyless_Man
Hasn't he left it now though? I don't know if he left early enough for it to avoid having his oily fingerprints all over it though

@creepiest-lizard I'm hoping this Chabon guy tells him where to go when it comes to the story.

If not, set phasers to wank

Another 'short trek' released with Ensign Spock and 'Number one.' Makes me think a pike enterprise series is on the way.

I'd take a Pike series. He was awesome. And hopefully self contained episodes.

Looked alright to me, except data looking a bit older and chubbier. I guess that is explained away as trying to be more human?

On Discovery - gutted they're continuing with it and not a Pike series. Pretty sure Anson Mount was jettisoned, based on his tweets. Michael's character needs a whole fucking rewrite and to bin the broody voice over. She's not a Vulcan and needs to show some humanity. Even Tuvok showed something more. I also need to learn who half the fucking crew are - I know Saru, Tilly, Stammets and the German one. That's it.

On Picard - fuck it. Even if it's shit, it's Patrick and he'll do some amazing shit. Though I feel he'll do a Logan and die at the end. Though the ragtag crew need to be interesting, at least.

I thought the DSC trailer looked interesting up until:

"...and that hope, is you Commander Burnham".

So another year of Burnham is space jesus who single handedly saves the galaxy. I gave it 2 years, won't be watching any more. The best characters have been two guest stars, the rest of them are so badly written.

And if you're going to ditch episodic, contained stories, at least make your arc coherent.

That should be rule number 1. The klingon war and red angel plots have been a complete mess. Absolutely nothing makes any sense.

It's such an awful, awful show.

It gets away with a lot because it looks nice. I'm really surprised it got another season.

Haven't seen the trailer yet, but the fungus Burnham focus has put me off.

I maintain that behind the Michael-as-saviours nonsense there are some good Trek elements. Just drowned out by tedious chosen-one nonsense.

Which seems to be a likely issue on Picard.

Exactly this. I don't think I can take another shows worth of 'its not cannon'.
