***Ask all you Mac and Mac software questions here.***

I want to buy a Mac next year; I'm even considering buying a MacBook and an iMac to replace my laptop and PC. However, my only reasons for doing this so far are the design - I like shiny things OK! (I will also be dabbling in web design and Photoshop, perhaps even video editing...)

So I have a lot of questions before I spend so much money. I know there are quite a few long time Mac users on here, so your help is much appreciated:

    1. What are the main advantages of owning a Mac?

    2. Do the laptop fans get very noisy over time? (this is annoying me with my Sony Vaio at the moment) I read an article that said in tests the MacBook fans never even kicked in.

    3. How easy do you think it will be to adjust to Leopard or Snow Leopard after a life of Windows?

    4. Have many of you had problems with your Mac? Do you require Applecare?

    5. Since Apple only produce a range of computers do you constantly feel annoyed/forced to upgrade or does the build quality and performance give good value for money i.e. do you not care and are happy to keep your product for a few generations?

    6. I have 'acquired' a lot of software for the PC such as Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I don't think I will come by this so easily on Mac so am quite willing to buy some software although no where near that price. Are there cheap but excellent/viable alternatives to Photoshop or Dreamweaver on the Mac?

Sorry if the questions seem weird/stupid. I will probably have more questions related to the OS if I buy one...!

Why does owning a Mac make you wear scarfs tightly around your neck in mid-summer and inspire an irrational interest in music by The Killers?

    1. I don't feel like I'm fighting my operating system, and I prefer the hardware

    2. Not that I've noticed

    3. Easy

    4. I've never had problems with either of my Macs (Powerbook and Macbook Pro, and a black Macbook at work) and have never bought Applecare

    5. I never feel forced into an upgrade. My Powerbook is nearly four years old and still going strong. The problem is the new models are all so very shiny...I want to upgrade, though I have no need.

    6. Depends what you need them for. I don't think there's a decent alternative to Photoshop, but I've weaned myself off Dreamweaver - you could try something like Coda (paid-for, but much cheaper), or a combination of free text editors and FTP clients and stuff...

Other people's mileage will vary, of course, but I've never had any issues.

Guess I don't own two Macs, then. How odd. Could have sworn I did.

There are 'ways' of 'acquiring' all the major software that exists for Macs, don't worry.

Also, in terms of website coding Coda is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic.
