Weren't you in a post rock band? -
Ofc, 'Post Rock' is a catchall for wildly disparate stuff.
Roepy is boring.
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennae to Heaven is my favourite album. Hurrah. -

Yep. -
RedSparowes being the basis of my tag. I just prefer Sparrows.
There's stuff like Eluvium, Helios, Labradford et al, but that's ambient really. -

What happened?
I came across said band more than once. -
Oceansize Oceansize Oceansize
Fan-fucking tastic. Although I found Frames a somewhat guided attempt at non-commercialisation. Some good tracks - but far too long and far too similar. Having said that the song Frames is an absolute beaut.
Pocupine Tree? I've only listened to Fear Of A Blank Planet, but I like (what little) I have heard.
Amplifier? Good but very samey after a while -

Registered 19 years agoDo the Dirty Three count?
A few things:
- F# A# (infinity) by Godspeed is probably the best album ever recorded, I reckon.
- Errors had the best post-rock album of the year
- Mogwai had the best post-rock song title of the year with "Stupid Prick Gets Chased By The Police and Loses His Slut Girlfriend". -
I don't consider Porcupine Tree to be PR. They're sorta prog rock. Amplifier too - just rock with some good old fashioned heavy stuff. I only have their ST album but it's pretty fun to listen to once in a while.
I'd include Dirty Three, cos I like them. Cinder is a wonderful album. Mogwai always have awesome track titles.
Also, Oceansize, whilst fucking great, don't seem PR to me. They seem more rock-with-PR-tendencies-and-a-fetish-for-time-changes-every-30-seconds. Of course, these are all very indeterminate phrases, but they serve a basic guide. -
True RedSparrows.
Oceansize themselves hate being defined as post-rock, and I could argue that they occupy a genre unto themselves (and is the reason why I got into this kind of music. Blame MTV if you must) or at the lest they form a broad umbrella over a number of genres of which post rock is one of them - just see their tags on Last.FM.
Anyone have any suggestions on bands similar to Oceansize? -
A lot of bands dislike it. Mogwai for one. I think Caspian actively embrace the term.
I've not heard a band really similar to Oceansize. Something like Tool is that kind of area, just nowhere near as good and unjustifiably arrogant, but that's just my view ;p -

Registered 19 years agoI'm not a big fan of Oceansize but what about Yourcodenameis:Milo? Or Hundred Reasons (ok, maybe not so much). Not to get into an argument over genres but Oceansize are really more math/hardcore.
Anyone want to recommend some smaller post-rock bands in the UK then? I love Yndi Halda and Souvaris. Vessels are good too but I'm a bit on the fence about buying their album.
I got the new Bohren & The Club Of Gore album, Dolores, recently and it's bloody fantastic. If you like Labradford at all then you must check them out. Despite the heavy metal name it's actually very laid back melodic ambient with a bit of jazz thrown in. The new This Is Your Captain Speaking album is pretty great too. Not sure if I like it as much as the debut but it's definitely a grower. -

Registered 19 years agoNo offence but if there's one topic of conversation I don't like concerning music it's the one about classifying bands and tagging them with overly descriptive adjectives. Genres help sometimes, don't get me wrong. -
Don't like the shouty bits in Mouth of the Architect ;(
Yes forever, I agree. I don't think that has taken place here, and I have already stated that 'post-rock' is a catch-all term that serves only as a loose reference.
I think Yndi Halda are pretty good. Pirate Ship Quintet are good, are they from the UK? Winchester Club too.
Monster Bastard Project are great simply because of their name. Although that was just for an EP I fear. Dunno what they do now. -

I left last year, to concentrate on my job here. I couldn't commit to the touring. They're still together though, just released a new album that was recorded while I was still with them called Embers which is doing pretty well. Think they're doing a UK/Europe tour in the new year. -

The new one is fairly similar yeah. It has moved on a bit, a little bit more cleaner and grandiose I suppose. Plus a tiny little bit of fun with electronic doohickeys, but nothing overbearing or ever-present.
Since I've left though, their newer stuff has taken a slightly heavier turn, with a lot more vocals too. None of that has been released yet though. -

Cool, I'll have to check it out.
