I tend to lump post-rock and prog into the same category, though I'm not a fan of the floaty pointless noise that seems to encapsulate a certain bit of post-rock. I need some rock in my post-rock. Thread needs more Sinch. recent album: earlier album: Even earlier album: Probably one of my two favourite bands (the other being Katatonia). Edited by orpheus at 20:18:03 05-09-2013 |

I was being fascetious, obv.
However, what Maturin posted is to me not post-rock at all: that has no moral connotations, it's simply a matter of form.
However, who cares!
I like floaty 'pointless' and then I like driving pow pow rock also. Of course, they can be combined.
See:
vs.
Neither of which are 'post-rock', but y'know.

Anyway we'll have to agree to disagree on the subject of this genre. Post Rock is not simply what you say is Post Rock, I prefer the bands themselves and a wider discussions elsewhere to lead the subject.

Like saying a square is not a circle, and not indicating any preference for either, it's just an observation.
Although of course with music genres, it's never so simple. And is useless, in the long run. -

Even better: Russian Circles - Memorial

Ahh. I have to admit I only got round to listening to the first one in the first link - Deficit. 'Twas good. Will give the rest a spin tomorrow though
edit: track? it's the whole album :/

Deficit is the heaviest on the album. Russian Circles do a fantastic particular kind of heavy - that epitomises it.
Last track features Chelsea Wolfe, who is good in her own right - check out new album Pain is Beautiful. -

PS Jakob's Solace is still a favourite. Can't believe no album has followed... or has it? Are they even together?

I had the absolute pleasure of being there on Monday night. Best gig I've ever been at I'd say. I saw them in March, but this one was something else.

Registered 13 years agoGoing through all my records earlier(cataloguing all of them because i'm skint and thinking about selling them) and I never realised the crazy etching on the back of Silver Mt. Zion - Horses in the Sky.

Not sure I can part with this one. Also, Young Mountain by This Will Destroy You is a great record. -
This Will Destroy You are such a great band. Next album out this year, I think. -

Registered 9 years agoOk, so I'm looking for something heavy and Mogwai-esque. Mogwai as in how they used to be up to The Hawk is Howling, not the more recent electronica stuff (although I don't mind that per se; just not what I'm looking for at the moment). Post-rock/metal is what I'm after.
Oh, and I've tried Russian Circles. Other suggestions would be welcome!

Hi matey. I have been listening to loads of post rock/metal for years and have found the scene has dried up somewhat recently. I haven't heard a great new post rock or metal band for a while which is a shame because some of my favourite songs ever have come from this genre. Anyway, I hope some of these tracks bring you the same joy they've brought me over the years...

Leech - Swiss post-rock band, instrumental and absolutely exceptional. I'd go as far as to say this band are flawless, my favourite post-rock band ever I think. One of my favourite bands of all time and I know people say this all the time but this really is criminally underrated. They are excruciating slow in their build ups but the measure and control... Everytime I hear this song I get goosebumps, it's so beautiful.

Next band, Devil Sold His Soul. Not sure why I like this or identify as much as I do because the singer is so weak and that usually puts me off a band. I think it's the relentless sadness of the atmosphere that keeps me coming back, despite the overall amateurish sound. In the right mood, like I was last night after a few beers, this can be so beautiful and powerful.

I won't waste your time with Isis, I'm sure you know them. If not, check out Hall of the Dead, Grinning Mouths or In Fiction if you don't mind some growling vocals.
Next is Red Sparowes, again instrumental, you might already know them but this song is just perfection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdz78NOLNp0 I wish they'd hurry up and write a new album!
I can't recommend God is an Astronaut too highly but this song and most of their albums bar the latest are pretty solid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKHblp1BLz0
I think the bands I've mentioned are at the top of their game of post-rock. Other post-rock/metal bands I've listened to in the past, Cult of Luna, Callisto, Mouth of the Architect, bossk etc don't quite match the standards of the truly grandiose and magnificent post-rock/metal bands. The above songs I've listened have come from someone who adores early Mogwai, especially Ratts of the Capital and Hunted by a Freak sort of sounds.
I really don't enjoy the meandering nonsense like Hammock and other 'floaty' and 'trendy' post-rock bands like Do Make Say Think. Also don't like Mono and a lot of the other bands that are considered post-rock so if anyone has any recommendations along the lines of what I posted I would love that too!
Final one, I can't resist, my band and one of our most post-rock influenced songs on our album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvapVUsMwaQ if you like Mogwai you will like this! We were really feeling the vibe of Mogwai during this song, we're all big fans.
