A not even remotely post rock band comes up with something a bit special

TWDY new album = good, but it's no Tunnel Blanket. God I love that album. -

Great track. I've only heard the version "hidden" at the end of Welcome To The North. Nice to hear this one too. -

Registered 16 years agoNot one but two Mono albums coming out next month. Rays of Darkness is supposed to be dark (duh) and heavy, while The Last Dawn is supposed to be lighter and more shoegazey.
I thought they'd tone down the strings after taking them about as far as they could on the last two albums, but it seems they've dropped them altogether.

Also, The Helix Nebula - best instrumental prog to come out of Australia since Plini:
If the opening solo (about 0:45) doesn't blow your socks off, you may be some kind of lizard-person.

Don't always get on with Mono, but sometimes they blow me away. Will get the new albums.
The intro to The Flames, turned right up. Oh boy.
Probably, Bill, but tbh I tend to buy direct from the US label for albums like that. Probably shouldn't.

Orpheus - afraid I'm a Lizard
I can't help it, those kinds of solos just make me think of 80s arcade games. It's totally unfair of me. -
Whereas this, this I can dig. Not really sure why it's different. Perhaps it's the repetition. I love a groove that just batters you over and over.

Interesting you'd classify them as metal - I always thought they were (along with Isis etc.) very post-rock.

Often feel slightly bad about posting bands like Helix Nebula here. Trouble is, most of what I listen to nowadays doesn't really fall under either category. I'm also a bit of a musical pluralist, in that I often consider genres to encompass more than the die-hard consider them to. Post-rock to me includes all the instrumental djenty stuff that seems to be taking off at the moment (all metal is essentially 'post-rock' in my eyes too), but there's nowhere truly 'appropriate' for it to be posted..gif)
Maybe we need a 'Weird Instrumental Metal/Rock' thread
Oh and @ RedSparrows - lizard confirmed!
lol
EDIT: I also think I post this stuff here because given the rest of the music here, thread readers are more likely to enjoy that kind of thing. It works in the metal thread too, but that thread tends to focus more on the traditional.

Registered 18 years ago@orpheus Yeah I would definitely class CoL, Isis, Callisto, Neurosis, Mouth of the Architect, Rosetta et al as metal. I hate labels but yeah I'd call that post-metal. All the prog-metal and 'djent' stuff also gets discussed in the metal thread. I'd probably even still class all the post-black and shoegazey stuff like Les Discrets and (current) Alcest as metal, but that may be stretching it more and more lately. The fact is the metal thread really isn't just traditional metal discussion, far from it.
Personally I think of post-rock as GYBE, ASMZ, Mono, Blueneck, Explosions in the Sky, Sanchez is Driven by Demons etc etc, and that's all pretty far removed from the likes of Isis despite some similarities.
There are too many genres of guitar music and metal-influenced stuff these days, maybe rather than having more threads someone should just think of a better name for that thread

I didn't end up looking too hard and just bought it from the U.S distro. Heard the copper variant from that label was pretty nice anyway.

Registered 6 years agoSexual art. Lovely stuff. I'd nab Young Time, CODY and Happy Songs.
I currently cannot get enough of Kiasmos's ST album. It's not post-rock at all, being ambient/electronica, but one half of the duo is Olafur Arnalds, so similar circles. Erased Tapes is such a good label. -

There's a cool Scottish post-rock band called A Sudden Burst of Colour. Check out 'Zen', it's a great track. I've seen them live a few times, they're pretty damn good. -

Fact Mag best post rock albums.
A few that could be contentious being classed has post rock, but they're still pretty decent albums in their own right.

Mono do that 'yearning' sound so well. This is proper teenage agony music. Love it.
