Update: Final now being played, good luck to both teams! Original post: Afternoon! To make up for the lack of decent matchmaking and ranked public matches, us regular forum-dwellers will host our own Left 4 Dead versus tournament, in which we can play exploit free in a few just-for-fun matches, culminating in a final a few weeks from now! The powers that be have kindly offered to chuck in a few prizes for the winners as well, with provision for 2nd and 3rd place loot, depending on the condition of the EG swag bag at the time. Prizes will consist of games and PR stuff from in and around the Eurogamer offices. Which, let's be honest, could win you anything from the real Gemma Atkinson to a copy of that leisure suit larry game from the 90s. Here's how it works, you sign up either solo with your own gamertag, or with three others that you'd like to team up with. You'll need a team name and a captain who will be the go-to point for all of your matches. If signing up solo, there will be a list of other like minded free agents for you to form up with below, or if you'd rather, i can automagically assign you a team after the sign ups close in just over a week, on the 21st of this month. The format of the competition will likely follow that of a football tournament, with two leg knockouts, or depending on numbers, a short group phase before hand. Once we know how many teams are in and what's what, we'll finalise the details of the thing. Rest assured you'll have plenty of time to organise and play out your fixtures. Starting on Saturdays, you'll have a week to resolve your match, with captains posting results in this thread afterwards. Unfortunately for the PC crowd, this will be 360 only! Throw us your gamertag and we shall begin. [House Rules] A match consists of both No Mercy and Blood Harvest. One point is earned for winning in either map, with a single bonus point obtainable for surpassing a score of 4000. However, there is only one bonus point per match so if you passed 4000 on No Mercy, congratulations, you have your bonus point and can not earn another. At the end of the group phase the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage and a shot at the EG sparkly swag bag! Exploits/questionable tactics First of all, we're operating on personal honour here (gasp). Generally speaking, if it's been patched on the PC version, or if you're vague as to what you're doing being legit, don't do it. Instant death smoker pulls are a definite no-no. Fair enough to damage people with a fall, but not from 100% health to death in one shot. A perfect example of this is on No Mercy 5 (the finale) at the top of the ladder with the satellite dish. If you know the pull, you'll now know that this is foul play. No hiding in places where a horde can't reach you. The horde is supposed to be able to reach everywhere, and this is certainly the case post patch. This includes areas that are invulnerable with the use of meleeing such as under the stairs on No Mercy 5. Whilst i'm at it, please don't access areas you probably shouldn't or bend the map's geometry in some way. Particularly in the case of strange bashable doors! .gif) Witch baiting, clawing at her or messing with her in anyway is naughty play. On the other hand you're allowed to drag enemies into her and boom close to her (read, on top of her emo face). No intentional blocking as tank. Go ahead and smash that car, but be careful not to block the way permanently for the poor old survivors! this might seem like a crazy rule considering it guarantee's a win for the infected, but it isn't supposed to happen, and again, has been patched on PC. Organising matches Captains are to agree on match times between themselves, once a session has been completed either message me directly or post results in the main thread. This includes scores for both maps. If you arrange to meet another team and only one of your team-mates show up. This is an automatic forfeit. The team that did show get's to decide on the forfeited map. If you arrange another bout to take place some time later for the second map and the opposing team are no-shows again, you gain the second map win and the bonus point. My understanding is that Ignatius Cheese, (team captain) is hoping to rope in myself (tag: Simplicitly) asphalt (tag: asphaltonline) and progguitarist (tag: Vicioushead).
However, I have not had a conversation with them all at the same time, so I guess for the time being this is still all hypothetical.
Are you going to publish a list of what is considered to be an exploit, and so on? Witch-punching, and that sort of thing? I understand that we were waiting for the DLC to fix those things considered obvious exploits, is this still the case?
Really looking forward to this - hoping to have some funtime games - my previous suggestion of competitiveness was only in jest, I'm just hoping there are enough games for those of us who get knocked out early to play... perhaps to win the wooden spoon?

I also wanted to ask about 5th team members, perhaps drawn from previously eliminated players, or the free agent list, for those occasions when teams might perhaps lose one of the four founding members owing to Flu/Man Flu, getting hit by a bus, and that sort of thing? -

It'll be 4 players per team, with no subs. You'll be able to play your match with a minimum of 2 survivors though, but if only one of you show up, it's a forfeit. -
