Sony x9005 is awesome . Watching natural wonders on BBC and I think it's only 1080 HD and looks amazing.

Yep. I went onto Blu-Ray.com and checked out which 4K ones have the best picture quality. Iíve bought about 15 of them already.

The Revenant is amazing, as is Lucy and Sicario. If you really want that UHD in your face wow factor, then Pacific Rim is the one. Shame the film is shit but never mind.

I bought the dedicated Panasonic UB900 4K Blu-Ray player. Wow! Itís a night and day difference between this and the One X player as youíd pretty much expect. Is the One X one good enough though?

Iíve not done a direct comparison between the 4K UHD but I was watching Guardians Vol 2 and that is one of the best use of UHD Iíve seen so far, although Murder on the Orient Express is also meant to be outstanding. I may watch that tonight.

Where Iíve really noticed a difference is when watching 1080p Blu-Rays. I watched The Empire Strikes Back on both machines and the Panasonic shits all over it. From a review of the product

ďThe UB900ís upscaling of HD sources to 4K for output to 4K TVs, meanwhile, differs from typical systems in two ways. First, it upscales the video in a single stage rather than pushing it through multiple stages that may introduce errors to the process. Second, it doesnít just add more pixels, it also doubles the pictureís luminance and quadruples the colour resolutionĒ.

This makes a huge difference. One X looks utterly flat by comparison. Thereís also no stutter or any problems that Iíve encountered so far and the remote is way better than the media controller on the One. Apparently itís also excellent for playing music CDs through.

Honestly, if youíre thinking of getting a dedicated player, do so. If youíre still not sure then places like Richer Sounds will do a demo for you if you bring in your favourite film. Absolutely delighted with this.

The two HDR slots now have two different sources going into them, so it requires a little fiddling. The ARC one has the UB900 and the 4K Apple TV and the One X and Pro going onto the other.

Iíve been looking at hubs/splitters but they all look a bit shit.

Oppo are calling it a day. Donít have any of their products but itís a sad day.

On the positive side, the prices of their players could come down significantly.

Bought some flatter ceiling speakers for the new house. For £43 they're pretty good. Sound quite good as well and a lot neater than the old ones. Bar my wiring job obviously

Indeed! Only done the calibration on them at the moment. Will put something Atmos on later. Looking forward to it!

@quadfather You can probs hide most of that wiring if you thread it through the downlighters. They just pull out.

I thought about that, but I was worried about the heat from the halogen bulbs. It's actually fairly neat - white speakers, white cable, white clips, on a white ceiling. It's not exactly standing out.

I prefer it yes. Not everything has Atmos. Only ones I've seen are on about 50% of the 4k films I get. But it's a clear difference for me when it kicks in.

It's not like the difference between stereo and 5.1 by any means, but not only do you get some depth up and down instead of around you at eye level, it's also object based technology. So instead of the receiver sending data to the left speaker, right speaker etc. It now has a "space" or surround field area that it can use to pin point an area within it where it can place the sound. That makes a difference.

Also, it's great if you game, as it puts everything into 5.1.2 mode whether it's designed for it or not, and the results are often pleasing.

I assume the ceiling speakers only kick in for choppers, planes and meteorites?

@Load_2.0 Rain is probably what you'd hear the most.

It could be a literal game-changer if you'd not only be able to hear if there are enemies behind you, but also above you (e.g. in shooters with lots of verticality).

It kicks in for those scenarios yes, but there's loads of others. For example, in the star trek films (the new ones), when the ship is under attack you have the "warning, self destruct" voice of the ships computer. That comes directly from above, separated from the chaotic sounds coming out from the "normal" level. It really makes a difference.

Also, I'm playing silent hill 2 hd at the moment, and it changes the way you hear the voices in the cutscenes, filling the room. Makes it sound...larger? All around you and above you. Imagine a large bubble in your room and you step into it and are fully surrounded. It's like that.

Vr sound is the closest example I can compare it to.

As soon as I own my own place, I'm putting in ceiling speakers and atmos. I am thinking of having separate gaming room to TV/cinema space, though. (space permitting...)

I think I will have to go to OLED for my next TV. The light bleed is painfully obvious on my 2015 samsung LCD. When white subtitles come up, half the screen lights up brighter. For games, this is not a problem for me, but for films it is horrendous - makes non-letterboxed HDR annoying. Wish I could unsee it now.

OLED is a real game-changer for movie watching.

Watched Shape of Water at the weekend on my LG B7 and it's visually the best thing I think I've ever seen. And it was a standard blu, not the 4K variety.

Looks fine as it is to be fair. I doubt anyone is going to look up there very often.

I need to agree, there is not a whole lot of symmetry going on in that photo quad.
It's probably the perspective but even the lights don't look like they are in a straight line :p

Stop it you set of bastards!

It's the photo, coz if I sit down on the sofa and look up it's looks different.

Damnit, now I need to take another photo to prove it (to myself) :)
