Registered 10 years ago@Fake_Blood Atmos-capable receivers have algorithms by Dolby and DTS that upmixes audio so top speakers will get used as well. Will not sound as good as dedicated Atmos audio, which a game has to support as well (in addition to the soundcard/console), but for immersion it's still better than nothing.
Best surround is when you don't notice it's there, but you'll notice if it's not there. That effect with upmixed sound is not as strong with top spekaers as it is with back left/right speakers, but it's still there. -

Registered 12 years agoAdvice needed!
I'm looking at buying a soundbar for my TV (Sony ex9305). I know little about the current offerings.
The onboard sound is ok but I'd like something a bit better. Not too fussed about womping bass and big explosions when watching films but a bit more clarity and depth would be good. So (I think) don't really need a sub
Something that sounds good a lower volumes.
I'd like to control the soundbar with the TV remote and it to turn on/off via that. If like to be able to stream Spotify etc direct without the TV on. No blu-ray player, console, set-top box.
The Sonos Beam looks interesting but should I stick to a Sony device for compatibility?
Budget is roughly 300-400. I've read a bit online but I think I'm getting too old to comprehend it all frankly! -

Registered 15 years ago@lordofthedunce Great TV, I have one linked to one of the little Marantz systems AVR's.
It works well, although the V+ and XBox were designed by idiots who decided that CEC was not needed and so if you switch these on then it does not automatically change the channels.
Edit:
Just realised how unhelpful this is! But will add, although the sound from the XE9305 is okay, a proper system is so much better.

The TV i did research lots, am very pleased with it. Although streaming stuff from Netflix in super hd/dolby vision i do notice the sky in films /shows looks grainy sometimes. Does yours get that? -

Registered 17 years agoI recently purchased a Yamaha YAS - 107 sound bar for my LG. Does a nice job for the money and you can add a sub if you feel onboard bass isn't enough. Also has DTX Virtual which is nice. My telly has built in Atmos and Dolby vision, so it's cool to switch between the two.AV forums gave it a nine out of ten. https://www.avforums.com/review/yamaha-yas-107-soundbar-review.14368

Registered 15 years agoI just recently (like last week) bought the Sonos Beam and two Play:1s for surround. It's awesome.
The Beam is replacing a dedicated centre and two bookshelf fronts. Tbh, our living room is pretty small, and the sound quality hasn't dropped. It's pretty awesome for something so small (and we now have more space, Spotify/Alexa support, I can play vinyls from dining room over it, etc).
So yeah, the Beam is awesome. If you can pair it with two Play:1s for surround, do that too!

Registered 16 years agoI've got a Sonos Beam and a 4k Sony TV. I think it's about as compatible as youre going to get.
I've got it running with two play 1 surrounds, too, but it sounds great without.
I posted more detailed impressions in the Sonos thread, if you can be arsed. -

That was some logical and productive advice, already found some models, and might not even go second hand!

So I went for the Yamaha after a good look around. I listened to a few soundbars in stores but it's pretty hard to get an idea if how it would work at home. I almost went for a Samsung hw ms660 but decided against that in the end, it was just a bit too much. The Sonos Beam would have been lush but most of its features and connectivity would have been wasted on my usage and setup.

Anyway, the Virtual X is the setting which I'll be using most on the Yamaha. The soundbar gives nice depth and is so much better than the tv's own speakers. Setup was easy, connected via HDMI Arc and controlled with my tv's remote. No streaming but I figured my Xe9305 does that anyway so not much need for that feature.
I can easily add a subwoofer in future but the built-in bass is surprisingly decent. I also live in a flat so don't want to piss off the neighbours.
Pretty happy with the purchase at this point, anyway. And I've already decided that when I have a house I'm going to do a proper job with the sound and vision setup. -

Registered 18 years agoI'm on the lookout for a new centre speaker. I have narrowed it down to either:

or
https://www.richersounds.com/q-acoustics-q3090c-matte-graphite.html
Any thoughts? Don't really want to spend more as also looking to upgrade my bookshelves. I think I'll need to wall mount on a stand above the telly too at some point.... -

Ideally you should match front and centres from the same range, rears less important.
I wonder if you’d be better saving more and buying the full package with fronts, rears, centre and subwoofer. -
I'm just using the set that came with my receiver (some small Denon of some sort) but want to upgrade gradually. Both have fronts that match so can pair them next time.
