Just ordered a new 5.1 system.
Upgrading from Kef T305 to Q Acoustics 3050i fronts, 3090i center, 3020i surrounds and the B12 sub.

I really like the T305 but I wanted something a bit bigger and more imposing, and once I sell the Kef on I should have had the full swap for about half the price of new.

I was looking at the Q Acoustics last year. Interested in what you make of them, went for Monitor Audio instead.

Got a confirmation that its all being delivered on Monday!

So I need to go out today and buy all new cabling and routing stuff, as well as a silly long sub cable. Having floor standing speakers and a larger sub means I need to reposition stuff.

I miss my Q Acoustics and Onkyo setup it was fantastic.
Moved from a house into an upstairs flat so was no point having it when it can't be used to it's potential. Although had I known about the gobshites downstairs before I moved in I'd have kept it to inflict on them.
Making do with a Sonos beam now, which is alright I suppose.

    Nm...

Arent the Q Acoustics cheaper than the Kefs? They are not nearly as pretty!

Not here, the 3050i Cinema Plus pack is a little more expensive, but Iíve also added better surrounds (3020i). Iíll sell the 3010i and make some back on that too.

I actually prefer the look of the Q Acoustics. The Kefs are nice but theyíre specifically trying to hide your system - I literally bought them because of the size of the room and to appease the then-gf by not having something bulky that she wouldnít like.
None of that is a concern anymore, and the Qs are really nicely designed speakers that have presence in the room.

Understood! I think I am in the hide things away camp still :)

Looks like the 305s are about 50% more expensive here than the 3050i set (I guess you need to add 100 quid for the more expensive surrounds).

How was your experience with the Kefs? Planning to get a 305 set in the near future for sexy white wall mounting. They look impossibly thin for a good sound but the reviews all say they manage it.

Honestly, no complaints. They were my first 5.1 surrounds and theyíve delivered everything I wanted from them. Iím in Stockholm city so living in apartments and they were ideal for the size room I had at the time, and I was conscious of getting something decent that would pass the gf style test.

Iíve got a little bigger place now and the living room is almost double the size. In truth they are still great, itís more that I donít like their look with all the new furniture, and Iíve always wanted a proper looking home theater and had the opportunity to make the change.

    @Technoishmatt
Itís not the 3050i cinema pack, itís the 3050i cinema plus pack. It changes out the little sub for the B12.

I prefer (or rather my wife does..) bookshelf speakers to hide them away. I'd love some big floor standing ones but a) the room isn't big enough to warrant it and b) won't fit with the layout. So bookshelves it is.

Not liking the price of receivers with 2.1 HDMI support at the moment for the new consoles. My current receiver only passes through standard HDR too so will definitely need to upgrade.

I've not actually looked at that. 2.1 wasn't a thing when I bought by receiver. Have to wait and see whether it's worth it - instinct is you can probably wait a year into the console cycle and upgrade then, when AVRs will have come down in price.

Games wonít support more than regular HDR anyway, itís just whether you intend to buy 4K movies on disc.

Thatís something Iíll be leaving behind.

4k disks work fine now though without 2.1?

If the consoles support DV but the AV doesnít, Decks wouldnít get it from the TV.

It's for games really you want 2.1, isnt it?

The new Denon receivers seem to have it, FOR ONE INPUT. What about if you have ps5 and series x.

Not to mention a new Nintendo console in 2025

    Plug them into the tv.
Providing you have multiple HDMI 2.1 ports there (which is basically only the LG OLEDs).

2.1 is just to support 4k 120hz right? I doubt new consoles will push that.

VRR is available today on Xbox one anyway without 2.1 isnít it?

I only have a 4k60fps monitor so bought a second hand 4k Yamaha AV reciever the other day to do pass through.

But then the sound being fed to the AV is compromised.

Xbox is definitely going to output 120hz 4k, even if the true resolution is lower, that is what the output will be. Halo infinite will be 120fps (resolution to be confirmed...). And stuff like HUD and UI could still be in 4k.

I assume 5.1 through optical to my old (non 4k) Onkyo reciever from an LG will be ok. My reciever does do DTS but clearly I won't get that through optical. Is there much difference?

My new new Dali centre is so bassy that I rarely find the need to turn on the sub these days - has this happened to anyone else? I mean the fact I don't want to wake up the rest of the house is a factor too.
