Just thought I would mention this because it seems like the kind of thing a few people here may be interested in.

    DCS: Blackshark

I have been waiting years for it to be released and totally forgot the game was even being developed, looks like it is finally out thought. Feedback on the official forums seems to be really good and there are a few reviews on various sim websites which are all quite positive.

It sounds like they plan on releasing more aircraft in the future (A-10 and the Apache plus more unannounced) as well so it could turn out to be quite an expensive game.

I stumbled along a couple of links late last year and then went and found some youtube videos. If it really is as configurable as they say it is and you can choose to balance the game between arcade and sim then it's a day one purchase for me.

    Not many reviews for this...
Maybe the 536page manual is putting people off.
    Anyone played it yet?
Would like a mini reader review please.

/manual costs extra 20 ways nearly a Kilo!

Is this the biggest manual to go with a game ever?

No demo but i like the video i watched of it.
IGN scores it 9.2 .. don't know how believable they are..
PC pilot gives it 95% classic.
    impulse gamer 9/10
    pc gamer 82/100
    seems universally liked...
I miss flight sims and especially a good up to date helicopter combat one.
Digital downlaod available may buy this when i get home..

Been tempted to get this for a while.

Made by the folks who developed Lock On: Modern Air Combat.

You can pick up the boxed version from Game now. I have only had a quick chance to play it so I decided to give it a quick run with the easy radar on then switched it all off. The easy options seem to work fairly well for people are not willing to learn how everything works, I wouldn't buy it if you want the constant action of an arcade helicopter game though.

I can't say much more at the moment because as I said, I have not had a chance to sit down with it properly yet.

Just a warning, it does use Starforce DRM (on both the boxed and download version afaik).

Starforce is a killer for me. No deal.

I will just torrent it and get it without the DRM infection.

Don't worry, it's not the rootkit-style Starforce. It's just online activation.

Ah OK then. I was actually looking at this recently, but I don't know if I've got the time to do it justice.

Just installed Black Shark and had my first flight.

Feels fantastic. I love the way the cockpit moves around as you fly, real sense of head movement rather than it feeling very static. Makes it seem very convincing.

The helicopter handles beautifully with a good joystick. Looks like there's loads to learn though in terms of aircraft systems before I could hope of trying to use it as a weapon though.

But that's half the fun of this kind of game.

How difficult was it to pick up and play?

    In what sense?

I've flown a lot of choppers in sims over the years and with my X52 HOTUS joystick/throttle the Black Shark is a doddle to fly. It feels a lot easier to fly than the Bll Jetranger in FSX.

I think a lot of that is down to not having a tail rotor, though you do need to use the rudder a bit to cope with wind and what seems like torque differences between the two rotor disks when lowering/raising power.

I found landing surprisingly easy. At least the approach. But something goes very wrong when I touch down and spins the chopper over. Not sure what I'm doing wrong yet. Must do he training section on this. I've only done the first two training missions so far, then spent a while just flying around and doing mad stunts to see what the shark is capable of.

Starting the engines is really complicated. But there is a keyboard command to get the sim to do it for you.

I've not had this installed in a couple of years, but this is a hell of a series. Made me bite the bullet to start building my own PCs in 2011
