The only good thing about them is that when I hear their name it makes me start humming 'cowgirl' -

I turn 45 this October and pretty much everything my kids listen too hurts my ears, I never thought I'd become my father who detested the music I was into during the 80's and 90's but that I have most definitely become. -

His Tainted Love cover was a bit, but then everyone was doing 80s pop covers that year

Registered 20 years agoI'm just glad these days there's stations like 6 music, well just 6 music really. I listened to radio 1 and xfm up until I was about 35, but beyond that it all gets a bit samey. At least with selected 6 music listening I can pretend I'm too cool for that kiddy shit, whereas in practice it just isn't for me any more. -
Tbf I find 6 Music a bit shit most of the time, I like some of the presenters but as far as the music goes I feel as indifferent towards as I do towards Radio 1.
My prefered radio choice tends to be local stations. Utterly banal; the legacy of Steve Wright in the Afternoon, but there's something strangely comforting about that. -

It’s fine 90% of pop music is meaningless shit, almost always produced by songwriting teams from Scandinavia and the USA. Add in all the horrific auto tuning and you have music that is hugely inferior to the pop we listened to as kids which at least occasionally had intelligence and personality.

Registered 19 years agoI didn't like it then, and I still don't, but I think a lot of 90s pop was generally well written. -

Registered 20 years agoAutotuning was mainly a problem with 2010s pop in my recollection. Maybe it started to come in by '99 - I really can't remember. I guess that Cher song was '98 but there at least it wasn't being abused to make a bad singer keep tune. -

I did, and you've said nothing more meaningful than "it was better in my day", grandad. Mal is right regarding autotuning, which is used at a low level to smooth out inconsistencies in lots of 'proper' music. If anything those shitty X-Factor programmes have given us the opposite problem with loads of wanky oversinging.

Any musical period seems better in hindsight because you forget the rubbish whilst the classics are still on the radio. Plus nostalgia factor.
No-one will remember Fifth Harmony, but Blank Space will be on the radio in twenty years time and everyone will say "it was classic back then, instead of this modern shite like Atomic Kitten 2040 and Billie Piper II."
