    Anyone know?

Don't suppose there is such thing as a filter that would give a tilt shift effect is there?

Looking for something to give the effect, but photoshop is out, as it's for filming.

    Anyone?

I haven't heard of anything like that. I think you'd struggle to use a tilt shift lens for filming anyway.

I have an idea though, but long winded but it would work. You could film as normal, take a single frame, apply the photoshop cheat method to it and record that as an action, then apply that action to all the other frames you've shot. Might that work? Could you do that as a bulk action?

edit - that's how (I believe) they did that recent advert on TV (for holidays?). Except that was based on a series of photographs rather that frames from a movie but same difference

Not sure, iirc, quite a lot of the test shoots I've seen for the 5D2 have used Tilt Shift lenses.

That bulk action is a nice idea, but I think it might be tricky and quite time consuming - I'll have a look, cheers!

I was hoping for a filter that had graduated frosting or something on it.

Same effect as the photoshop graduated blur thing, right. I'm not sure. Annoyingly, I can't find anything relevant in google as all the results are about the PS fake method

Are you aiming for the same model train set kind of look? I guess you'd need to whack the in-camera saturation up as that's one of the parts of the fake method in PS

Ooo ooo I have an idea. Get a UV filter and experiment with selectively applying vaseline to it

You could emulate that perspective correction thing in After Effects surely? (as long as the source quality is high enough at least... which is why you would want to use a HD camera)

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm going for.

I thought it would be quite simple, having a coking type filter with a gradual blur coming from each side but clear in the middle, but like you say, all googling leads to the photoshop method. :(

Might be worth a look at the vaseline!

Cheers Valli. I'm just using iMovie HD, and there doesn't seem to be any filter to achieve this, plus I'd love to do it in camera if I could.

I'm using the 5D mark 2, so there's no problem with source quality.

It's basically a graduated blur, leaving a clear strip across the middle. Sort of thing. Regardless, it would need to be a square filter in order to ensure the right horizontal orientation of the clear strip. But the out of focus effect is more than it just being blurry....

You could also probably do something reasonably similar with a lensbaby which are pretty cheap, but the disadvantage of that method would be you'd have a patch of focus rather than a strip as with a genuine tilt shift

Sounds like a heck of a lot of job to do all that in camera. It's dead easy to set it up "in post". :) Gradient, correction, saturation, the works.

What's the target resolution of the film btw?

    The target res is 720p.

So would it be relatively easy to do in After Effects?

If you're familiar with the program, yes. Otherwise it may scare you away. ;)

I've read now about the gradual blur you want to create and that you consider vaseline. Jaybus! The time you'll spend setting that one up is better invested into learning After Effects, hehehe!

    :)

Seriously, I'm fucking blown away by it. Took a couple of minutes of footage in China Town last night, and it's just incredible.

I don't wanna take photos anymore!

heh, yeah I can imagine that's absolutely right.

I bet After Effects isn't cheap though...

They have a trial version for CS3 IIRC. You could take that project to someone who has a license afterwards and have your film exported. :)

Well that's a bit of a shame, but doubtless you'll be exceptional at video too you bastard

It's quite funny that you're now technologied up beyond compare, and this weekend I bought a pinhole camera :)

Slippery slope deem – won’t be long before you want a proper dedicated prosumer cam.

Actually I want one, they look awesome.

I dunno, the 5D get quite favorably compared to $100,000 range cams in a lot of the things I've been reading - I reckon I'll be satisfied with it for a while!

At least I fucking hope so!

Pete (or anyone else that doesn't), you said you didn't have Quicktime, can you see if this works?

(If it does - bit cheesy, but it's my first go!)

edit - it's good! The song works really well. I like the way you've used the shallow dof

    Also, while I'm here...

Does anyone know if there's such a thing as a piece of equipment that would fit between my camera and tripod head that would allow me to pan!?

Rather than having to get work to fork out for a whole new tripod head...

You should have a look around for how to make your own steadycam rig. I saw one on the gadget show that they made for about £30 and it was brilliant

I haven't checked lately but Premiere (and probably After Effects) can use Photoshop filters. Just copy it into the plugins directory - it'll be a lot more efficient than a Photoshop Action.

I think you can pick up the older ones for about 80 quid but they are really extreme and probably no good for your purpose.
