| @Dr-Strangelove Supercars 2!! Now there is a forgotten gem. Loved that game, even playing the butchered Atari ST version at my uncle's house. |

Super Cars 2
For some reason I can still hear their logo music in my head... Can't name it off the top of my head, but it must've been snippet of classical music because exactly the same bit of music turns up in the soundtrack to the film "Excalibur".
It was a bit weird when I rewatched "Excalibur" recently on Blu-ray - first time I'd seen it in many years - to find myself being suddenly reminded of the Super Cars and Lotus games in the middle of the Arthurian shenanigans on-screen

Games of significant influence to me
Treasure Island Dizzy C64 - One of the first games I can remember playing
Sonic the Hedgehog - for the graphics, going from a C64 to that was big at the time
FF7 - For my first real RPG and an introduction to FMVs and 3D gaming
Goldeneye 64 - The most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer game (local)
Shenmue 1/2 - So original and unique, can't wait for 3
HL/HL2/Portal - For showing that a story in a game doesn't have to be hours of interspersed dull cutscenes
There are probably loads more, but these stand out in memory right now as having changed my view of the medium.

Tetris (although I don't like it when it gets stupidly fast)
Andrew Braybook games on the c64 and Amiga (Paradroid, Uridium, Morpheus, Gribbly's Day Out)
Football Manager
1980s text adventures
Angband (and its many variants) -

Registered 13 years agoProbably not the "best" game of all time but Flashback is one I'll look back to with incredible fondness. Just thinking about it gives me warm, fuzzy feelings
Back then with no internet access and knowing very little about it and how the plot was to unfold it really was captivating in the extreme -

Registered 5 years agoI don't rate Goldeneye as highly as I did back in the day. It was certainly one of the biggest games of my teens, and it's still very playable today (in single player), but it was surpassed by the amazing TimeSplitters 2 five or so years later. That game is golden. -

This. Chaos is 32 years old this year, and I must've played it at least once every few months throughout those three-and-a-bit decades - not for nostalgia, but because it remains a highly enjoyable game.
"Chaos on the Spectrum" is the correct answer, as it always is when this question is raised.
It's a bit like Chess, I suppose, in that it has a relatively compact set of units and rules but those components produce enough possibilities to ensure the game never plays out exactly the same way twice, and so never gets old.
It's pretty much a perfect thing, and the fact that the entire game (code, graphics, sounds, everything) fits into a poxy 48 Kilobytes still amazes me. We've got icons on our PC desktops that are bigger than that.
Yep, if I had to choose just one "best game of all time" then it would have to be Chaos
