I consider myself to be an rpg fan, but out of the 20 I've owned, I've only ever finished 2. They would be "The world ends with you" and "Star ocean 3". Anyone else have problems finishing JRPGs? |

Registered 12 years agoOnly JRPGs I haven't finished that I've started I think are Persona 3 (but I'm still playing that so it doesn't count), Enchanted Arms and The Last Remnant
Very much looking forward to Star Ocean 4 -
I made it to the end boss in FFX but the disk gave up on me, hence me giving up on the game.
Currently playing Chrono Trigger DS though which I really want to finish -

FFX.
that's all. -
Played: FF7, FF8, FFX and Skies of Arcadia
Finished: FFX
I don't plan on playing JRPGs anymore either as I find them too repetative and dull now so it'll only ever be one. -
Losy Oddyssy
FF9
FF8 -
Finished:
BoF: Dragon Quarter V, FF7, FF10, SMTensei3, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, Dark Chronicle, Dark Cloud, Grandia 2, Shadow Hearts.
Playing:
World Ends With You, Fire Emblem, C. Trigger DS, Persona 3 FES.
Couldn't be bothered:
Dragon Quest 8, FFX2, Star Ocean 3, FF Tactics, Valkyria Profile (the PSP one), FFXII, Riviera: the Promised Land -
FF7, Lost Odyssey, Skies of Arcadia
I've not owned that many. I never finished Tales of Symphonia, booo! -

Registered 11 years agoPlayed about 8 or 9. Of those I've only finished 3 I think, those being Final Fantasy VII & VIII plus Skies of Arcadia.
Now ploughing my way through Chrono Trigger for the first time, it's lived up to the hype so far and i'm confident it'll become my 4th
The problem for me is the sheer amount of time needed to invest in the games. It doesn't seem such an issue on a hand held where I can plug away at them in bed or during my lunch hour. Oh to be 14 again with ridiculous amounts of spare time. -

Registered 12 years agoI've always preferred the western rpgs, but i've played some on the gameboy. Played Golden sun 1 and 2 when they come out, but that was mostly for the graphics as they played lovely but had a really trite story. I've also played Breath of Fire, Mario and Luigi for the gba (which was great) and the DS (which was a real chore), and then Final Fantasy 6 when that was re-released.
I've started both FF10 and 12 but hated them both. Final Fantasy just doesn't lend itself to full 3D, i'd rather have sprites or prerendered backgrounds.
I also played FF9 back in the day, but actually just finished it this last Christmas, and now i'm working on Chrono Trigger which is just as great as they hype i've heard of it. At the moment i'm considering what should be my next WRPG and i'll probably give FF13 a chance -

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Blue Dragon
Persona 3
Star Ocean 1
Oblivion
KotOR 1+2
Jade Empire
Mass Effect
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy Tactics: TWOTL
Didn't finish:
Final Fantasy VIII (just wasn't powerful enough at the end, and couldn't be bothered levelling anymore - I was young! - but will go back to it one day)
Enchanted Arms (really didn't like this, and started getting disc read errors, so gave up)
Kingdom Hearts (stuck on last bunch of 14 boss battles or something, will go back to it)
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy XII (it's good, but the storyline is utter gash. I love the combat though)
I'm sure there's more that I've finished/not finished but I can't remember! -

Registered 14 years agoHave not started:
Dragon Quest VIII
FFT: War of the Lions
FFVII
FFVIII
Vagrant Story
Did not finish:
Shadow Hearts (irritating trial-and-error maze section made me turn off the game)
FFXII (because the game seemed to be missing large amounts of game)
FFX-2 (because I can't navigate menus at the speed of God)
Disgaea (because grinding is only fun for so long)
Dark Chronicle (because I got distracted. I wanted to finish it!)
FFIII DS (because it was fucking boring)
Tales of Eternia (ditto)
Baten Katos (collecting cards is fun, but I can do that in real life without people shouting in my ear)
Golden Sun 1&2 (because I can't play games non-stop, and if you forget where you're meant to be going, there are NO clues).
Paper Mario TYD (too... much... Mario...)
Super Paper Mario
Playing:
The World Ends With You
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Skies of Arcadia
Finished:
Skies of Arcadia
Tales of Symphonia
FFX
FFTA
Xenosaga Ep I, II, III
Mystical Ninja 64
Riviera: The Promised Land
Chrono Trigger
Mario and Luigi 1 + 2
Etrian Odyssey
Shiren the Wanderer
Ok I think that's everything... good thread! Made me realise I've played relatively few JRPGs! -

Not Finished:
.hack//OUTBREAK (Boy was I sick of it my then),Final Fantasy IV,Final Fantasy VI,Final Fantasy XII (Grind, grind, yawn), Golden Sun (just sorta forgot about it)
Still Playing:
Eternal Sonata
So, yeah I have a pretty good record of finishing JRPGs I start, and games generally. It's usually something big like a tedious boss fight that causes me to stop, but receptiveness will generally be the reason I don't come back to it. -

Registered 11 years agoFinished:
FF7, 8, 9, 10, 12
Dragon Quest 8
Vagrant Story
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 1, 2
DNF:
Shadow Hearts (stuck somewhere near the end, couldn't be arsed loading an earlier save)
FF6 (on PS1, it seemed broken)
Paper Mario (became tedious)
I'm not a huge JRPG nut, but I usually finish what I start. Maybe because I only play the ones that get the best reviews/word of mouth. -
Thread created at 10:37. It is now 12:04 and Jin is probably still writing out his list o_O -

Registered 10 years agoI usually reach that difficulty hump before the last boss and can't be bothered with the grind. Though its usually things like saves corrupting or discs and consoles breaking that actually defeats me.
Ones I have finished though
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X and X-2 (only the normal ending on X-2)
Folklore
Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
Dark Chronicle
Anachronox (I know its not a JRPG, but it plays like one)
Not finished
Any other Final Fantasy (I will get round to FF XII one day)
Dragon Quest VIII
Chrono Trigger -

Registered 15 years agoI've finished...
Blue Dragon
Enchanted Arms
Eternal Sonata
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Folklore
Grandia II
Lost Odyssey
Phantasy Star Online (lvl 200 character on the GameCube)
Pokemon Red
Radiata Stories
Skies of Arcadia
Vagrant Story
Wild ARMs - Alter Code: F
I've played and failed to finish (oh boy)...
.hack//INFECTION (I'm actually impressed that they found a way to make a game with all the crappiness of a MMORPG, but without the one upside of social interaction)
Alundra (too hard for me as a kid, haven't tried it since)
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits (rubbish combat system, horrible PAL conversion put me off)
Atelier Iris (dull, horrible PAL conversion put me off)
Baten Kaitos (was enjoying it, but the GameCube got boxed up at some point and I haven't gotten it out again)
Breath of Fire III (couldn't get into it the two times I tried it on PSone and PSP)
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (horrible game mechanics that I couldn't be arsed with)
Chrono Trigger (got stuck at some point, and playing on an emulator wasn't nice)
Chrono Cross (boring, don't like multiple endings/missable characters)
Crisis Core (Realised that I really hate all the new FFVII stuff)
Digital Devil Saga (liked the story/setting, hated the game)
Disgaea (just got tired of it)
Disgaea 3 (I intend to go back to this)
Dragon Quest VIII (an RPG without a story or remotely interesting characters? How quaint)
Etrian Odyssey (far too hard for me)
Final Fantasy Tactics (got stuck/bored)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (again, bored, no motivation to continue)
Final Fantasy III DS (DULL DULL DULL)
Final Fantasy IV DS (pretty good, but I just can't play long games on the DS)
Final Fantasy V (awful)
Final Fantasy VI (got really far in on an emulator, got stuck, eventually lost save)
Final Fantasy XII (reached Giruvegan and wondered why the hell I was wasting my time with this garbage)
Golden Sun (dull dull dull)
Kingdom Hearts (hated the combat)
Lucifer's Call (DULL DULL DULL)
Lunar (deleted save by accident, pissed off, never went back)
Lunar: Dragon Song (absoloutely terrible game)
Lost Kingdoms (reached a horrible dungeon and couldn't be arsed)
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (got bored with it, don't really care about Mario's world)
Persona 3 (sick of Tartarus)
Riviera (didn't grab me at all)
Shadow Hearts (sold it, wished I hadn't, am not willing to pay £25 for a grotty used copy)
Star Ocean (boring, couldn't get into it)
Star Ocean 3 (no idea why I quit this, I was pretty far in -- will go back one day)
Suikoden II (multiple endings/missable characters? No thanks)
Tales of Symphonia (reached the second disc, suffered from GameCube-packing-away fate)
The Last Remnant (levelling system is fucked, can't be arsed as a result)
Valkyrie Profile (awful voice acting, couldn't stand it)
Wild ARMs 3 (10 hours in, got bored, gave up)
Wild ARMs 4 (5 hours in, got bored, gave up)
Xenogears (for a supposed classic, it did a good job of boring the pants off me)
Xenosaga Ep. I (gave up because it looks ugly as sin on a HDTV and I don't have a CRT handy, but I'll go back to it one day)
There are lots more 16-bit ones which I've played for half an hour here or an hour there, but I don't feel they warrant inclusion.
So yeah, I really suck at finishing things that I start. The first sign of boredom or a part I don't like and I usually give up and play something else. -

Crisis Core
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XII

Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Grandia
Grandia 2
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts 2
Phantasy Star
Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star 4: End of the Millennium
Phantasy Star Online
Secret of Mana
Skies of Arcadia
Tales of Eternia
Vagrant Story
Unfinished:
Star Ocean: The Second Story - I think I skipped ahead as the enemies suddenly became very difficult plus I didn't like the battle system.
SaGa Frontier 2 - Reached the last boss and after many occurences of one-hit party insta-death decided to admit defeat.
Chrono Trigger - Played an emulated version many moons ago and reached an impasse.
Purchased the DS version but have yet to start it.
edit: Added Vagrant Story. -

Secret of Mana on my SNES twice
Final Fantasy VII
Golden Sun
Final Fantasy III DS
Blue Dragon
Enchanted Arms
Final Fantasy IV Advance
Eternal Sonata
Unfinished:
Final Fantasy VIII
Skies of Arcadia DC
Final Fantasy X
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire 2
Golden Sun 2
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy V Advance
Dragon Quest IV DS
Final Fantasy VIII just didn't do it for me, I think I'd got to the second disc.
Skies was good but the random battles grated too much and I had friends waiting for me on PSO.
Final Fantasy X was too slow and plodding for me but I may go back to it one day.
I was enjoying BoF Advance but it got too confusing, I think I was quite near the end. I planned to play the second when the first is finished.
Golden Sun 2 has my data copied over from the first game and will likely be the next GBA game I put in my DS when I finish FF V, assuming I can get back into it.
Dragon Quest VIII was superb and I was really enjoying it but I'd just got a 360 so wasn't motivated play on the PS2 anymore.
Only just started Dragon Quest IV on my DS and it looks likely I'll spend a lot of time on this over the coming weeks, between bouts of Revenant Wings and 360/PC gaming.
I do have a sort of love hate relationship with JRPGs. The majority of the content grates but I like the game mechanic itself. I much prefer Western RPGs though.
edit: I've got Lost Odyssey waiting for when I've finished my first Fallout 3 playthough. -

Registered 16 years agoI've finished most of the ones I've played (so, lots and lots then), so I guess it's easier to list the ones I didn't complete:
Chrono Trigger (emulator problem and somewhat boring)
Final Fantasy VI (also emulation problems - hey, but on the other hand I was playing those games on the Dreamcast)
Dragon Quest VIII (boring to the Xtreme!)
.hack//infection (simply terrible)
Suikoden IV (ditto)
Breath of Fire III (became too hard towards the end)
Arc: Twilight of the spirits (ditto)
Makai Kingdom (too confusing)
Shiren the Wanderer (no specific reason)
Odin Sphere (again, too hard towards the end)
Tales of Symphonia (didn't like the battle system)
Tales of Eternia (see above - seems I have learning difficulties)
Xenogears (another one of those mind-numbingly boring games)
So, in total, about a quarter of the JRPGs I've played. Not too bad then... -

Registered 12 years agoI fancy listing some
Finished:
FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
FFX
FFXII
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Eternal Sonata
Star Ocean 3
Dragon Quest VIII
Grandia
Grandia II
Tales of Symphonia
Vagrant Story
Infinite Undiscovery
DNF:
Last Remnant (still in my list of things to finish but I can't be arsed at the moment)
Final Fantasy X-2 (absolute dogshit I thought, boring characters and over the top camp)
Enchanted Arms (got stuck, was really enjoying it too)
Xenosaga III (I think (was fucking awful))
Crisis Core (PSP, I barely play it, therefore it just kind of...disappeared of my radar)
Need to finish Persona 3 and I've got Persona 4 on order. Also got Star Ocean 4 to come, and hopefully Tales of Vesperia if they ever release it in Europe. Also wanna start a game of FFVI one day
I've got Dragon Quest IV on DS to play, and Star Ocean's 1 & 2 on PSP, but I probably won't because I never travel and can't sit in my house playing a handheld... -
