Registered 17 years agoWahey!!! July's Practical Photographer turned up last night. Anyway, they've an interesting quick tutorial on getting Fuji Velvia type effects with digital pictures.
So I took one of my [link=http://photos.stevenhocking.co.uk/displayimage.php?album=8&pos=29">favourite pictures and applied it, and this is the result! Absolutely fantastic! I've -

Oh yes, and I do like the heavily saturated look for this kind of photo.

You can NEVER simulate Velvia digitally, that film is just such a bad ass! =)
If you go for heavy levels/saturation changes, I suggest you use RAW mode exclusively, it will give you a much better colour resolution to play with and avoid the ugly posterizing effect that comes with it.
Another tip is to switch levels with curves. Curves (Ctrl+m or even better, as an adjustment layer) let you do non-linear modifications insteaad of the linear way levels works in. -

Don't suppose anyone knows of a good curves tutorial anywhere? -
Googling for +photoshop +curves +tutorial found me this nice tutorial, it's rather good actually.
Using curves will let you deal with the most advanced colour correction jobs. -

Nice ED209 shot there, smoothpete, and a good example to use in that curves tutorial I posted above!

Wonderful - well spotted! Works just perfectly with the colours of the train. One 'critique' - you might have been able to rescue the highlights on the platform and the train by underexposing by a couple of stops. You should still have been able to use levels or curves to get the exposure right for the old geezer.
Okay, dumb question: Define 'highlights'...
(Remember, I'm a non-technical talentless photographer here...

Registered 18 years agootto: Noted. It's taking me quite a while to get familiar with the concept of exposure, as I really haven't had to think about it before getting the SLR. But yeah, it's a shame the top of the train got blown out, especially. -

I really like the photo of Bled. The quality of the light, the dappling of the tree, the architecture, and the slight fogging in the distance all make it look like a chocolate box painting - with a Mothercare buggy in it.
I've tried to cobble together some of my preferred stuff into a little gallery/portfolio-type thing, here. It's a really difficult exercise.
One minute I think I'm being overly selective, next minute I think I'm being absurdly indiscriminate. And I've still got several years' worth of negatives to scan in, so it's only going to get worse. :/
Good point about the histogram. It's one of the few things (other than speed) that are missing from my diddy A95 - it can show a histogram, but only in play mode - I don't think you can even get a histogram on the short review after taking a shot. -

edit - don't know about the 20D but the D70 has a 'highlights' view on the LCD which will flashes the highlights on and off which is really helpful. I keep my view on that and the histogram all the time, really helps.
Edited by otto at 13:56:28 17-06-2005
Yeah, I just checked, the 20D does the same. You can set it to show the histogram after every shot and any overexposure flashes on the LCD. That is, indeed, massively helpful. -
