Registered 14 years agoLaugh Out Loud at Anseo at 8.30. I've played there a few times. Usually 4 or 5 unknowns and big name.
The International is the big one on a Wednesday. Not sure what time it starts, but they usually have biscuits. -
Dunno if anyone else has seen this so thought I'd flag it up. There's been a bit of a furore surrounding this Guardian article, purporting with the punchy title "The new offenders of standup comedy" that comedians like Richard Herring and Brendon Burns are just setting out to offend for its own sake. Having seen Herring's new show, which incidentally is more than what Brian Logan has done apparently, it's clear that Brian Logan has taken his words out of context like some Daily Mail cunt, because clearly that wouldn't have fitted his bizarre agenda that he already had in mind before he even bothered to think which comedians to lay the blame at. Basically Brian Logan is a twat.
More links in reaction to the article:
Richard Herring's response.
Brendon Burns' response (scroll down a bit)
Michael Legge
Dave Gorman
Andrew Collins
It seems as if Brian Logan may have ruined his comedy journalist career pretty soundly from the amount of comedians saying he's barred from watching their shows from now on. Good as far as I'm concerned. -
Yeah of course there are comedians out there just to offend, but Logan picked on completely the wrong comedians. He had to take out of context what they had said to prove his point, which ultimately invalidates his point that this is a trend. If it was an article talking about the ways these comedian's ways of tackling these subjects in interesting and very intelligent and balanced ways then it would have been alright. As it is he's on course for defamation charges, because people who haven't seen these shows he's talking about come across as racist, when they're the exact opposite of that.
But yeah, some people do shock just to shock. There's good eggs who actually think about what they're saying and trying to impart a message though and they really don't need a cunt like Brian Logan misleading those who haven't seen the shows to jumping to certain negative conclusions.
*I put the wrong link up for Richard Herring's response, fixed now. -

Registered 17 years agoJust read the article and Richard Herring's response. It's a pretty shitty thing to do and boils down to lazy, irresponsible and inconsiderate journalism. It's good that he's getting a collective shunning. -
I love Andrew Collins. That is all. -
I'm seeing him do some bloody stand up with Robin Ince next tuesday! -
Can someone recommend a good Juggler for Brian Logan? -
Heh, exactly, something where he doesn't have to think sounds right up his alley. -

Yeah, my girlfriend and I were discussing it the other day and it completely missed the point Herring was trying to make about racism. It's staggering just how wrong he was, I assumed it was to prove his point but he just seems to have proven what a tool he is. -

i'd like to take the credit for that one but...

Registered 14 years agoOffensive for the sake of offensive isn't funny. I did a show with a guy here before whose whole set were really poor wank jokes just to try and gross people out but he died on stage. I know my stuff isn't exactly family friendly but I never try to just be offensive.
There's an american chap who's name escapes me who is amazingly offensive but it seems to just be for shocl can be ok.

And so we have Richard Herring's response and also
Brendon Burns' response.
Both bring up very eloquent arguments. -

Registered 14 years agoI went to a charity gig the other day and ended up performing. I was given the 'headline' slot, and the acually headliner went on just after the interval. It was an odd show. Everyone did well, but the crowd were terrible. -

How did Michael McIntyre get famous? Am I the only one that thinks he's an unfunny fop? -
Hard work and a broad appeal. -

Incidentally, watching Jimmy Carr in concert last night* made me question how on earth he has become so successful. His act is appalling. There's absolutely no structure of any note, he jumps from one topic to another in a matter of seconds, making non stop shitty observations. It sickened me. It's like comedy for people with ADD and he makes Tim Vine look like a king. It's amusing listening to the audience too, trying really hard to get their laugh of acknowledgement in quickly before the next crap joke. I refuse to believe they were having a genuinely good time.
(*On TV. There's no way I'd pay for that shit.) -
Tim Vine is king though. -

Have to say I'm finding Michael Mcintyre really very funny. Have I reached that stage in life when 'broad appeal' is me? -
Ah cool.. just try and enjoy it.
