@Armoured_Bear donít be silly, itís human nature. The middle class will always want to save face with friends and neighbours

If you look out of your window every once in a while you might see it in action

Generally we have a herd mentality. We like what we know and feel comfortable with that.

Merc C class is lovely to drive. Nicer than a 3 series imo.
I'm sure they are but I despise that 'floating ipad' screen they have.
Had mine a while back now - before the silly screens.
I might not have mentioned it for a while, but I have an Audi S5 now.

@Armoured_Bear middle class is a social group in between working class and upper class

A window is something rooms other than basements have. They are transparent, meaning that human eyes can see through them to something called the ďoutside worldĒ

    Does that help? 😃

VW Tiguan Allspace? Better badge than the Skoda to keep the wife happy and it's lower depreciation should put it in your price range if you're leasing or buying on PCP.
This looks like a viable option. Should be able to get new and within budget on pcp.

Slightly smaller than the Skoda, but slightly bigger than the DS. Could be a winner :)

Im sure its a bit bigger on this version, but my sister-in-law has a Tiguan and the boot is *ridiculously* small. She would have been so much better off with a Golf.

Yeah it's bigger, but with 7 seats it the boot will be very small. Like you say, size of a hatchback if you're lucky.

Seems like the Tiguan Allspace is a goer. She didnít like the Skoda, but at least this is a compromise on the DS.

Probably going to have to go with the 1.5 petrol auto though which iím a bit unsure about on an automatic. Think it may be a bit slow off the mark. Would prefer the 2.0 diesel but itís a jump up in cost and at c. 8k miles per year there isnít really any material saving in fuel cost.

Test driving one next weekend so see how it goes. Also going to take the pram and see if it can fit into the back.

Should be able to get a few £k off too based on the quote from coast to coast cars.

Auto should be quicker of the mark than manual, the engines not too bad. 150hp but bags of torque, should be good for overtaking

Really? Maybe itís just our current auto, but itís a bit sluggish pulling away and complete rubbish at overtaking. Itís a 1.8 VTec I think. Or something like that.

Itís a family car so doesnít have to be high performance.

DSGs arenít typical autos, thereís no torque converter or anything like that although modern autos from ZF are fantastic. VWs DSG is pretty quick too.

Honda make their own auto transmissions, and I think theyíre generally pretty whack

    @elstoof

Thatís useful, thanks. I do like an auto but the one I have has no acceleration.

See how I get on on the test drive. Iíll printing out my coast to coast quote too as itís £4.5k off list price. Thanks for the heads up on that too.

Civics dont have great acceleration anyway to be honest. They are good for lots of things but speed isnt one of them (unless it's a type r).

inline 6 from BMW + 8 speed ZF. Best combination I have ever driven in my life. Match made by the almighty himself

Aren't the c class Mercs meant to be a bit better than the 3 series now? I prefer the bodywork on the BMW though myself.

My 1.0 litre turbo seems to pull away fine. Sweeping generalisation there.

Depends how you define better really, I donít really like Mercedes designs and particularly donít like the C Class. The interior is a bit plusher but you donít buy a BMW for the interior. If you have an interest in engines then an I6 is usually going to make you happier than a V6, and no one else currently offers them - although thereís talk of a new Merc I6 coming. All comparisons of which is better to drive are pointless when comparing cars of this class tbh, C Class/A4/3er arenít going to set any track days alight but the B58 in mine is an astonishingly good engine and brutally quick - 0-60 in just over 4 seconds but can still give you 45mpg in the motorway
