Could I be so bold as to jump into this thread with a car maintenance question? I've used the search function but we all know how bad it is on here.

I've been a car owner for nearly 5 months now having passed my test earlier in the year. I bought a 2009 Mazda 2 TS2. In the last couple of months it has developed a "squeak" on the outside somewhere whenever the car gets thrust so say changing gear from 1->2 / 2->3 or me tapping gas. This does not always cause it but I would say maybe 50% of the time it does, especially if I'm going uphill.

I've had it in the garage twice now and they cannot determine the cause but thought it might be where the exhaust connects in the middle on the joint so they lubed it up well and proper, but its still doing it. They said the exhaust is in decent condition and not looking faulty in any way shape or form. The only other thing they noticed was a crack in the catalytic converter shielding but they didn't think that could cause it.

As it is still doing it and the garage have washed their hands of it aside from replacing stuff with hefty cost, do you guys have any idea and experience on what could cause this?

The squeak does sound like metal against metal such as an old metal fence panel rubbing against another metal panel and it is only brief. I can practically replicate it fairly often if I'm driving and let go of all pedals and push clutch in then release again. On the release it makes the squeak. The pedal is not the cause as it does it without touching clutch as well like stated with tapping gas.

Sorry for the long post, feel free to have a mod delete if not in the right place but the car is starting to drive me mad now which your first car should not do. Changing it is out of the question as I can't afford to and aside from the squeak, nothing else is a problem.

Congratulations, here is an important life lesson:

10+ year old cars will always make some annoying noise or another. As long as dashboard lights aren't coming on and smoke isn't coming out of the engine, ignore it until it makes you fail an MOT.

    Sage advice.

My 2002 BMW has a new noise every day, some go away almost immediately, some stay a while, some vanish then return like an old friend.

Mmm while there is an element of truth there noises like this can be key to stopping an imminent problem. I had an issue like this and it was the fan belt for the alternator - drove me mad and at the garage several times. Ended up having to refurb alternator. actual underlying problem was fixed by replacing fan belt in the end.

Sort of related... what's the quickest way to get rid of a car? I have three days to sort it out before it's going to cost me more than it's worth.

The amount of shit I've had with it, the canal wouldn't be a bad bet... but yeah, I'd hope to get enough to at least cover what I've paid for insurance on it since I've had the new car.

@cov Fan belt has been replaced as it was on it's way out and cracking. I did think it was that causing the noise at first as it seemed to start soon afterwards. That has also been ruled out by the garage.

I'll just have to live with it from the general census on here. See what crack is when it is up for MOT next year.

Do you have a driveway or somewhere to keep it off the road? Declare it SORN if so, cancel insurance And get a VED refund for whatever remains

Why is it that half of the decent EVs are SUVs? That's a little larger than I'd ideally be looking for.

I'm guessing there are a few factors.
    - The extra weight of batteries and/or extra motor in the case of hybrid is a smaller percentage of the initial total.
    - The gains are highest in terms of emissions, because SUVs are shit.
    - Sales. SUVs are selling well, gotta splice the current fashion with the modern tech.

They sit high off the ground so you can hide the skateboard batteries underneath easier

Are suv’s in the UK mainly 2 wheel drive too? Here in Belgium they are very popular, but very few 4x4 because they are too expensive. So I don’t get it really, only upside is you sit a bit higher in a suv.

So far, yeah (Ireland too). The upcoming plug-in hybrid ones will typically have a 4 wheel drive (Peugeot 3008, Skoda Kodiaq) split between electric and petrol.

Seriously thinking of getting one of these if we can afford it. We live down a lane that has grass growing in the middle of it so just some clearance and 2 wheels drive would be fine. About once a week my partner would need to 400km round trips that terminate with some countryside and mild off-road driving which isn't possible with the current car and very expensive for a proper 4x4. These ones seem perfect for us, dunno about anyone else.

Welp. I've ordered myself a Kia e-NIRO. It's a bit of a stretch financially, but it seems really good. It's due in August so I've a while to wait. I can't even try to arrange finance until April.

Nice. Am jelly. Need to sort it out in the new year, the murderer mobile is such an embarrassment. I would have a Model 3 (as an aside, how fucking much are they in the UK?!) but I want to be on the side of good when Elon's horrible crimes get reported

Model 3 is a minimum of £39500 ish after plug in car grant. e-Niro is about £34500. It's still not far off double the cost of my current car.

Yeah, I know, I looked today. Elongated Muskrat fucked Canada, too, to get under the pricing rules for the rebate, they put out a 'special' $45k version which is software limited to 90 odd mile range.

I do hope he gets put in prison

90 mile range? Pointless for many drivers.

Yes, pointless for anyone, really. Tesla are only really great due to their range and supercharger network. God only knows what the range is REALLY like on the highway, in the winter

My cousin just got a Model 3 at the weekend. He loves the Muskrat. Hopefully his won't suffer from any of the QC issues.

There’s a model X parked on a drive further down my road, I’ve seen the AA man tending to it at least 3 times this year when walking past

I really hope Rusty’s real name is Robert so that it’ll be Robert’s e-Nero. The dealership can play that Bananarama track when it’s ready to collect
