Thanks for the replies chaps. I read on a few other forums from tall fellas saying they did a 'foamectomy' with the driver seat to get a couple of extra inches which helps with headroom. Heard the mk3 is roomier in the cabin but also the engine is mounted a bit further back so I dunno how that'd be on my legs. Guess it depends on the size of your inseam.

I should have said mine is a mk2 so dunno what the differences in space inside are to mk3 - I just know the mk2 is a lot prettier with more flowing lines, ahem

(edit, that is imo, mx5 owners are very loyal and may burn me at a stake for saying that. oh and you soon realise it is your duty to wave at every other mx5 druver - except those in new ones)

Those little Abarth 124s are one of my favourite ever cars believe it or not. I came very close to buying one a couple of years ago, but changed my mind last minute. Donít think they are even available in this country anymore, tragically.

Toyota MR2 Roadster might be worth consideration too

Very good value for money, can pick one up for a grand or a pretty low mileage one up for £3k

All this talk is making me wonder whether it might be a good idea to have 2 cars: a roadster for fun driving and a hatchback to transport my mountain bike to the Peaks. Only problem is I live in a terrace with very busy on-street parking.

I'm currently driving a 2006 Corsa (get in) but I'm reluctant to move on because it starts every time I turn the key, costs me nothing to run, and I don't have to worry about damage.

I've been trying to decide on a a hatchback replacement that's capable of transporting a mountain bike, but the only thing that tempts me is a Golf GTI or Audi S3 (I've never owned a truly fast car and I need to get it out my system) yet you're talking around £30k for either of them, which seems mental for a hatchback.

I've owned a last gen MR2 and a first gen MX5 and always thought the Mazda was much more fun to drive. The Toyota always felt so skittish ( but maybe I'm just a big scaredy cat ).

One of my friends had a first gen MR2 and ended up in a back brace for about 6 months.

I currently own one of the Fiat 124 spiders, at 6í3Ē itís definitely snug in the cabin but I absolutely adore the car.

The Fiat 124 is basically an MX5 to the point that the cabin and media centre is exactly the same, itís even made at the same production line in Japan. Problem Fiat had was people shopping for a sports car like this, often know their stuff and Fiat decided launch a very similar car at a higher price than the MX5.

The plus side the car itself is faster with a 1.4 turbo, it literally drives like a go-kart. Also itís pretty rare.. Iíve seen maybe 2 in 2 years.

Thereís also some good deals (on the remaining new and pre-owned stock) I got mine with 2k on the clock from a main dealer which was used as reps car reduced from £27k to £16k. Would have loved the Abarth, which looks and sounds amazing but couldnít justify the price at the time.

@paulboy81 I know the feeling ! Just a few months ago I traded my old Legacy estate for a 05 WRX ( mid life crisis edition ). It was a lovely sight seeing the old estate being driven away by the dealer.

    Also, yeah, poxy kids !

Thatís the reason you stop at 2 kids guys. They should hand out S Max and Zafira flyers to new dads in the hospital
