Will defo buy this but hoping to be able to complete Overlord II and prototype first then trade, or wait until sub £20 Re the first game stealth, it was a total pain in the arse, but the overall game was excellent, and worth playing until completion. |

Registered 16 years agoHmm I wasn't going to bother with this but I am getting very tempted. I have got some games to trade so I may well try and pick this up.
I'm a sucker for a good Western. -

Registered 17 years agoApparently the PC version of this game lacks an in-game V-Sync option and forcing it through the driver control panel doesn't work either.
The fix for Vista users is to edit the C:\Users\[Your Name]\Documents\Call of Juarez - Bound in Blood\Out\Settings\Video.src file and change:
!VSync() // enable vertical sync
so it reads:
VSync() // enable vertical sync
i.e. remove the exclamation mark (!) then save the file.
Tip comes from nzweers on the Guru3D forum. -

Despite my order for this game showing as being prepared to be sent this morning at 9am, it wasn't actually posted until about 10 minutes ago with a delivery date now of the 4th so I'll have to wait until Saturday to play it. Life can be such a bitch sometimes!

Registered 15 years agoMidway through the first level (civil war - cod-CoD bit). Lost a bit of the atmosphere of the first... and I don't know if I'm just tired and playing like a tit, but I'm getting murdered at the moment. Can't see where the buggers are shooting from...
...and the unerring accuracy of their dynamite is reminding me of CoD in unhappy ways. Cover system is intriguing - but not quite right... Not sure yet. -

Registered 17 years agoI watched the first 30 minutes of this game on Gamersyde and I can't say I'm too impressed with the Call of Duty style opening section. Very uninspired IMO. That said, it looks like the game gets a lot better once the brothers head off to their house so hopefully the rest of the game isn't a western retread of Call of Duty. I don't think we need another one really. -
Urgh.
disc was right (in the What's new thread): terrible poor man's CoD beginning, with dynamite that's more annoying than even CoD 5's grenades, and shooting gallery gameplay. I hope Darren's impression from the video is correct and this gets a lot better.
(FWIW, I really liked the first one) -
By everyones reaction to this I think I'm going to wait for Red Dead.
What I think would be cool in a western is, if bullet holes appeared in the wooden houses etc, and when your inside sunlight shines through them. That would make me rethink buying this. -

Registered 17 years agoI actually got my copy this morning so I'll be able to play it properly tonight.
From watching those 40 minutes worth of videos though on Gamersyde the game does have a kind of simple, overly linear look to it, so much so that I have to keep reminding myself that it's a first-person shooter not an on-rails shooter akin to Virtua Cop or something. I think it's the concentration mode that makes it look like a shooting gallery kind of game though. Hopefully... -

Registered 15 years agoon act 3 now, first act was a chore but glad I bought it. Played the first and loved it, this has had a few good moments so far that has made me smile. First game in a while to do so. Not saying its a must own but if your tempted and enjoyed the first I would go for it. -

Registered 16 years agoEnjoying this so far, nothing mind blowing but a solid enjoyable experience. The first level was pretty by the numbers but there were some nice visuals and I like the overall style of the production.
Cover system works ok - a bit unresponsive at times but nothing major.
No trouble with dynamite or anything like COD grenades for me so far, playing on the normal difficulty. -

Registered 19 years agoI really enjoyed it, overall.
I thought the cover system was pretty good, bar some awkward moments and I liked how they animated to make it feel "natural"; your arms bending and crossing over to point your pistols around corners and stuff, rather than the more common, bland lean.
To be honest I didn't really notice the linearity that much, I just kind of accepted it without a thought I guess. I was always thinking "this is pretty much like being in a wild west film. Dudes popping out from cover in the streets, the eponymous 'dudes and their wonderful big hats silhouetting on rooftops with rifles', busting open doors and quick-shooting dudes, a stagecoach chase. Mega."
There was a bit of room for manoeuvre, and I was able to flank badmen without direction a number of times.
I played through on hard, with a little trepidation, but it paid off. There were only a few bits full of frustration with that difficulty, so I reckon Normal might be too easy in this case. Not sure I'd be up to scratch for the unlocked super hard though.
The quick-draw stuff was pretty bad. I don't think I did a single one first time, which broke the flow a bit and made me feel like a loser.
I don't know if that's down to Hard, the controls, or it's just a bad mechanic. I got the feeling that it'd been designed almost solely with console controls in mind. It seemed like your mouse sensitivity reverts to nothing for those bits, which suggested to me "what I should be doing is jamming the analogue stick hard top-left to draw when the moment comes, but I can't because I don't have one."
So yeah, after all that waffling, I really liked it. Six or seven hours of solid (if a little repetitive) wild west FPSery, a bit of GTA-lite free-roaming and sidequest-taking thrown in here and there, Marc Alaimo being awesome, Indians, Chrome 4 being nice, h0rses, pretty revolvers.
It lacks that certain something I can't put my finger on to make it brilliant, but it's good fun that kept me engrossed all the way. -

Registered 15 years agoI like the hit detection on this, it's spot on, even the MP is solid (Tombstone level is ace)!
Although why did they leave a lobby out?????
Haven't got any real time to get into this till tomorrow, but loving it so far! Great summer release, hope that people pick it up as the MP is really good!

Registered 17 years agoThe bow is fucking awesome. Theres a little segment of bullet time right when you knock one so you can line up a shot effectively.
Very little arrows hanging about but Goddamn its satisfying. -
Didnt like this at all, already returned, the cover system is broken, it feels like Medal Of Honour (stop the COD similarities now, COD is a decent series and doesnt derserve being compared to this shit) Western, the western feel is destroyed by the hyper accurate pistol shooting. Graphically, okay, but nothing great. Dynamite is annoying, not sure if people those days really did chuck the stuff with this amount of quantity.....
Avoid, its a rent or sub £20 purchase. -

Registered 13 years agohuh, weird - i love the cover system so far. it's the first time i've seen something that feels a bit natural instead of making my character stick to a wall like a velcro monster.
one thing though, what the feck do i do near the start when i have to stop the enemy from landing? i'm shooting the enemies in front of me with the cannon, but i keep failing. -

Registered 17 years agoCoD is a good series. Tee hee oh u.
I like how you point out the accuracy of the guns but fail to point out the exact samething in CoD, and the throwing of dynamite is far less than the spamming of grenades in CoD.
The cover system works really well on the PC thanks to range on input provided by a mouse. The range is negated during the showdowns which just don't work all that well on the PC.
The inspiration is pretty obvious but theres more character and charm in the writing than anything else. The pleading of William after the brothers track down a fleeing Irish villian is brilliant. -

Registered 13 years agoI am at act 5 and it's a mixed bag, but leaning to the good. I actually like the part were the two brothers separate for a bit most so far, because it allows you to go at your own pace rather than running through a never-ending shooting gallery.
Like the cover system too (it needs some time to get used to it) and some of the mountain/desert scenery is really oozing atmosphere. I hate the duelling stuff, however. It seems very random and unfair. I hate the fact that you can't change the difficulty settings during the game in order to avoid having to go through some of the latter duels for about 30 times (I am playing on medium). Yeah, and the dynamite is shite too. Think EGs review was spot on.
Edit: PS3 version, btw. -

i'm doing the first set of optional side missions, and i'm on the third mission. just as the game saves a checkpoint, i get killed and now whenever i try to load the game the screen is black. i can move around and the game still plays, but i can't see anything.
:/
/ edit - it fixes itself if you exit to main menu then go back in, but goes back to a black screen if you die.
haven't tried with regular missions yet, but this better not do it every time you die on normal levels - booting back and forth from the title screen is going to send me insane. -

Registered 13 years agomultiplayer is great fun. my only gripe is that if you end up in a six man deathmatch and you're dumped onto a map like tombstone, the map is waaaaaaay too big for six people and most of the match involves running around empty areas then being sniped in the head out of nowhere.
extremely satisfying when you plug someone though (which happens quite a lot in the majority of games). -

Well, I'll be picking this up tomorrow. Got a quite night tonight so I may dig out Fistfull Of Dollars etc. and have a night in with Clint.
