Call of Juarez 2; Bound In Blood Page 4

Well I bought this on Friday on impulse, and managed to get afew hours in on it Saturday afternoon). It's a strange game, one moment it's a solid 9 out of 10, and the next it's the 7 out of 10 Eurogamer awarded it. It certainly has peaks. In a weird way in reminds me of Call of Duty games so far. It's not the freeroamer I expected. Only starting Act 2 but it's already had some stand out moments. The story is quite good, the vocal work against the character lip movement could be better, small issue. Probably just my shit xbox tbh. And hello mexican girl in Act 2. Nice. She forgot her laptop from Dead Rising though :D

Overall... definitely worth a rental. Purchase wise, I'm happy. Quality is up there.

Good but not amazing is my opinion on this game after playing some three hours of the PC version to Chapter 6.

The first five chapters feel two parts Call of Duty and one part a shooting gallery and it's not until Chapter 6 that the game opens up and offers you more freedom with optional missions and the ability to wander a landscape on horseback that isn't just a long corridor. I like this but it makes me wish that the entire game had been made like this.

That said, the gun play is actually a lot of fun with a clever cover system that works well without the need to press an extra button to use it. The game also benefits from a decent story, great voice-acting and some nice banter between the two main brothers during the level which helps it stand out from all those other FPSs where you're on your own. Me likey that!

Feels a little console-fied and simplified compared with the first game I played on the PC but at least the engine runs well apart from some nasty LOD (level of detail) issues. The depth of field effects are a little overdone IMO and animation is a bit wooden (especially that of the faces) but the overall effect is very nice.

7/10 so far from me. If the entire game was less linear and more like Chapter 6 then it would have got 8.5.

wow. gotta say, although i'm loving this game the whole way through, the levels from the point where you move into Indian territory and start wading your way through the mountain areas is just stunning to look at and amazing to play. I thought they nailed the "wide open spaces" thing in the first one, but even the best landscape shot in that one is blown away here. the plot feels like it's jet propelled, too. and the guy who plays Ray is even better here than he is in the first one.

Yeah, it really gets much better midway through. Some of the scenery (like the whole village 'outside Tucson') is breathtaking, and I too wish there would have been a bit more time for exploration and less shooting overall.

But I still hate the duels. That there is no way that the engine either adjusts to your skill (say, after 5 failed attempts) or that you can turn down the difficulty in-game is almost game-breaking for me (console version at least)

interesting. i absolutely hated the duels in the first game - rooted to the spot, and then you have about two seconds where the cursor spazzes out all over the screen with no reason to it whatsoever. ack.

the newer way feels a lot more natural to me but of course mileage varying and all that.

I am not feeling it at all - beginning of Act II now. Really can't stand the game one bit. Ridiculous, hand-held shooting gallery. It's like the worst bits of the CoD series (anyone remember United Offensive, the CoD 1 addon?) in a Western setting. Do this, now do that, cutscene, now go there, cutscene, forced "slomo" scene, do this, go there, do that. Fuck off.

And how the fuck do I turn off the auto-aim? It disgusts me. I want my crosshair to be in the middle, and nowhere else. My brain is tuned to balance out even the slightest movement - the bloody crosshairs dancing about make me mad.

    /breathes

Yet another game streamlined to shit. Give me the clunky predecessor any day.

Yeah the auto-aiming is fucking terrible. Jumping up onto heads which I then try to correct and completely miss.

    No.

There's only an option to turn off the totally OTT auto-aim if you use a pad, but a rest of auto-aiming remains with the pad or kb/m.

Chapters 6 and 8 were really great because they don't feel as on-rails as the rest of the game. If only the whole game had been designed that way it would have been excellent rather than good. Those two levels have definitely been the best ones for me although the jailbreak level was really, really good too.

I'm getting a bit fed up of all those duels. Initially these were cool but now they're annoying and I groan every time I realise another one is coming up. It's not so much they're hard, it's just that every one is exactly the same and waiting around for the gong is just getting tedious. Must have played about 8 or 9 of the things by now...

Still the story and acting are good enough to keep me playing it. Nice game even it's not quite as good as I was hoping it would be.

what annoys me is the complete lack of extra bonus missions that the first game had loads of. why bother to include them when you can announce DLC two days after the game launches, right?

    / ffs

anyway, i hate that there's no two player version of the duel online. i could imagine becoming quite addicted to that. seeing as the DLC is going to be two multiplayer levels and one singleplayer bit there's probably no chance of that happening now.

I got this off LoveFilm and enjoyed it far more than I thought I would... once I got the hang of the duels.

It's not perfect, the horse riding looks stupid, there's no train chase and the game can be very annoying at times. But it looks beautiful, (especially the area around the Indian village) the voice acting is excellent and the story is interesting.

oh and the explosions look really cool too :D

Played through as Thomas in bang on eight hours, went straight back in as Ray - and it's even better. Wasn't sure after the weak opening levels, but the atmosphere, graphics, the tale it tells and the AWESOME cover system really won me over. Superb little game, all told.

Played online for the first time tuesday night. It's really good fun, just not a whole lot of people playing(PS3) The mode where you have a group of desperados robbing points on the map reminded me of assault mode on the first Unreal tournie.

Anyone else playing online from these hallowed halls or just me?

That is a feckin good credit for a game. Just phoned Game and they quoted £22, still fair play. Re prices they do change of course. You could pay £40 for my Overlord II on Play or £18 from Zavi.
I'm working on the fact both games are only a few weeks old, both 360 ect, so a straight swap seems fair. I tend to sell my new release (but played of course) games for £20 or under on the EG swapsies thread, I'm happy with that return and would rather deal with a EG-er.

    Shoot him in the face?

Quite enjoyed the demo but I don't think it was enough to convince me, particularly as I don't really like Westerns. Good cover system, though.

Played and completed over 3 evening sessions, overall an excellent game. I feel much like a lot of people re the Duels (pain in the arse) but apart from that and the fact you can get for just over a score (or on my swapsies list;) I would recommend. The Ghost Town was excellent.

The duels are ruining this game for me. It's in danger of going in my 'to be traded' pile if i get stuck on another one.

Just copy the movements of the AI. If he takes a step right, you step to the right etc. And always have your hand just above the holster. I struggled with the duels at first but once i started doing this they became piss easy.
  • Deleted user 30 August 2009 14:21:14
Too late. Given up on it.

It was just an average FPS anyway. I can't be bother with the frustration of multiple retries of the duel bits on top of that.

Hmm... played the demo of this and wasn't sure overall, but I loved the cover mechanic. Hopefully something similar will become the norm in FPSs - it makes the combat more realistic and fun, and I'd imagine if you got the animations right it would make multiplayer shooters look alot less stupid.

I like how once you've completed the Campaign mode, you can go back and do it as another character and the gameplay is slightly different, something alot of devs could learn from, good to see that you will be able to do that in Heavy Rain. Online is awesome especially manhunt mode, add me on PSN: TT_DIE_LIONHEART
