Sorry, but posting on Twitter while your own child is dying is fucking mental.

    I agree.

It is weird, but what else is she supposed to do? What if she feels alone? She cant do much else.

Perhaps it was the way she found easiest to tell her family and friends what was going on? A 30 sec tweet is much easier way to communicate with lots of people then individual calls or texts.

I don't know the ins and outs of what she wrote but I hardly think it was "omg! De Docta is sooo hot!!! LOL! ".

Maybe I'm behind the times, but I just don't accept that - posting news of that significance on Twitter for everyone to read because it's 'easier' really doesn't sit well with me.

I hate twittering. Literally you just go: “I’m sitting in a restaurant having a good time.” I mean, what is that? And people are spending all this time.

Well there you go - fallen at the first fence. If you don't know about something, don't talk about it. Twat.

What many people forget about Twitter is that really, it's no different to sending a text or email to a group of friends. For most people it's not an act of public broadcast, but a quick way of sending the same message to a specific group of people.

The reason we get news stories like this is that Twitter is searchable, and therefore can get turned into something much bigger than intended.

For me, it's part of the way I work - I can communicate with groups of journalists and PRs all at the same time when I need to ask for some info or a link - and they do the same with me. It's a good collaboration tool, it's instant and it's free. I also make sure I use email, the phone, and (shock horror) meetings, as anyone who thinks that social media is the be-all-and-end-all is an idiot.

Yes, a lot of people post utterly pointless things - but they are the same people that spout rubbish on Facebook, blogs and anything else they think is cool.

It's great for following porn stars too and seeing what life is like for them.

Mostly life for them consists of being fucking bitches to anyone that dares to question their lifestyle, and taking photos of their cleavage with their iPhones. Have a look at Bree Olson's twitter, it's hilarious. According to it, she "gets stuffed with cock and pumped with cum" by complete and utter strangers several times a week. It's hilarious!

Fair point, and I do see the point of Twitter as a communication tool. However, I really do find it unusual that someone would even think of posting on Twitter while their child was dying.

It's fair enough to not get Twitter. The thing is there's really nothing to get offended about but I am regularly meeting, speaking to or reading about idiots like Gilliam who are just that. Do you see me going on about how we need to kill everyone that reads the Daily Mail? No. (even though it would be of considerably more value to the planet than killing people that use Twitter)

The problem with Twitter, it's biggest hurdle, is the fucking mainstream press who are falling over themselves to 'embrace it' or 'get on board' and force it down our throats. It makes people that don't understand the value of the system just baton down the hatches and hate it even more, regardless of any value it might have to other people. The Gilliam comment is indicative of this attitude. I personally remove people from my Twitter list who post things as self-referential and inane as "Having lunch" or "Just had lunch" or whatever. It's very useful for keeping up with people whose lives you have an interest in, for getting cool links in the same way you do from an RSS feed or the TT thread here, or for chatting with people in a casual basis like you do with texting.

Finally, if you don't like it, don't fucking use it and please, for God's sake, stop fucking going on about how it's shit and a plague that's bringing our planet to it's knees or whatever bullshit you've invented in your head.

Just go about your life like it doesn't exist and I'm pretty sure you won't be any worse nor better off. I've actually stopped using it lately as I had enough to do in my life without updating it all the time with stuff, or even reading it, and I'm perfectly happy to let those that do love it get on with it.

Yes, that is a bit bonkers - same as the woman (the wife of the founder of Twitter, IIRC) tweeting as she gave birth. But again, you are bound to get some mad people out of 40 million users....

It's easy journalism for papers that are skeptical of technology like the Daily Fail to highlight the daft uses - same as they do with games really...

MrEd just made the point I wanted to make - just with lots more and cooler words ;-)

When did this get incorporated into google? Just noticed there's an ep of Top Gear on I haven't seen, a Bolivia special. I google top gear bolivia, and there's a live feed of twitter at the top.

I'm not sure my opinion is any more or less valid than anyone else's. I suppose it would depend on the subject.

I've really held off this but in the interests of understanding how it works, I've recently started to use it. Much as I hate the cult of celebrity, I confess I did get very excited when Warren Ellis answered one of my comments. I'm guessing most celebrities don't bother interacting with their flock though?

About as informed an opinion as Mr "Doctor Parnassus Imaginarium"...

Is it me, or does using Twitter instantly render someone a hate-able cunt?

I only ask as recently a friend of mine, one of my best friends in fact, someone I'm usually very fond of, has started using it in ernest.
It has become apparent that with every little thing they write, I'm becoming less and less keen on them.
