I'm not trying to draw analogies with the 360 but a lot seem to going tits up. I know the most pissed off shout the loudest but it is starting to stand out. I know this is only personal experience but in the 7 people I know who own a Ps3, 3 of them have had to be sent back to get fixed. What's that about? |
How many PS3s are failing?(YLOD, traffic light of death)

Registered 15 years agoMine is fine after buying at launch. So that makes 2 now (your 3 minus my 1). -
Safe to say it'll be nowhere near RRoD levels ^___^; -

Registered 9 years agoMine is a launch model.
Funny thing happened 2 days ago when I just got the wavy lines and the tuning orchestra music but no xmb. Rang Sony and they got me to hold down the power button until I got 2 beeps. 6 options came up and then I had to reformat the hard drive. Luckily I didn't have too much on there and my game saves were on PSP, backed up.
Apparently because I turned it off during a download from PSN (siren chapters I think) it corrupted the data.
Apart from that little hiccup, all good -

Registered 10 years agoGot mine about 5 weeks ago and it seems fine, mind you it is still relatively new. It does get some hammer though. What has happened a few times is the sound has stopped working via HDMI and I have had to change the HDMI port to a different one on my TV to get it back on which can be a bit annoying. -

Registered 15 years agoMy launch console has never had any problems. Still extremely quiet too, whereas others have said theirs has gotten noisier over time. -
I've got an intermittent loud fan and occasional crashes. Nothing major as of yet. -

Registered 9 years agoI strongly suspect Sony have covered up the REAL facts regareding the machines reliability and that the percentage of failed units is MUCH higher than they would have you think. This is what happens - You have honest, hard working people paying their money for such an expensive machine, yet nobody can explain why the cost is so high. If I buy a PS3, I want to play games. Who here is honestly interested in paying an arm and a leg to watch movies in a slightly higher resolution??
Sony should cut the price of the console by removing blu-ray and this WILL also improve it's reliability. -

Mine had that until it got YLOD a couple of days ago.
I was playing it alot before it broke though, so I don't know if the loud fan and crashes were early signs of doom, or if I just played it too much. -

Registered 14 years agoI've got a PS3 with PS2 backwards compatibility had it since Dec 2007 and it's been running fine. Make sure it's got plenty of air flow.
I've noticed mines also gotten louder but only with the high end games such as KZ2, LBP and MGS4. Play something from PSN very, very quiet.

Registered 11 years agoI have a US launch PS3 that's always worked fine. I know about half dozen IRL with them and no one has had to send one back.
Plus the 6 folk I know haven't abused theirs like the 7 folk you know, therefore the PS3 is clearly indestructable under normal use. -

4 people I know who have a 360 have had a RROD and another one got a lazer burn on a game in the 360. Don't know anyone yet who has had a broken PS3, I suppose you really do get what you pay for.

The build quality is one thing that's always impressed me about the PS3. It just feels so solid and reliable. -

@ disc
I really don't know, though recent gambling exploits have convinced me that I'm extremely unlucky.
Oddly enough, FIFA has broken 3 of the 5. Loud whirring then the disc drive just conked out for good..
Edit: FIFA 08 for the 1st PS3, FIFA 09 for the last 2 -
