Is Norton any good? The new one got good reviews and is meant to be much better than last years, and have a bigger database than Nod.

I only got that from reading internet reviews though.

Why is Avast shit? 2 years ago it was the one that everyone recommended.

Found shit loads of Trojans the free one missed when I upgraded to NOD 3-4 years ago.

Think I'll stick with NOD, cheers all.

Well, a quick Google suggests Avast is probably best of the free AV software out there and does a very good job. However its not as good as a paid for one (fairly obviously). Of the paid for ones, the latest releases by Bitdefender and Kaspersky are rated the best, with Webroot and Nod32 following up behind them.

The Free AV software from M$ is rated as pretty good, but not as good as Avast or Panda Cloud in the free market.

Avast is the nuts. I visit the odd 'questionable' site and if I ever pick up anything (once or twice a year maybe) Avast has always spotted it. Although Avast home is free there is also a paid for, premium edition, so the whole "not as good as a paid for one" isn't really that accurate. Admittedly, they prolly don't make quite so much profit as Kaspersky etc. but they do have an income stream so IMO can afford to develop a quality product.

IIRC Avast gets very bloated though in the long-term and starts using more system resources and gets slow and shit.

Or did I just imagine reading that?

Anyway, I use Avira and it seems pretty good, but that said, I don't download potentially harmful stuff.

Gah, fucking Norton shite. My work has decided to "upgrade" to a variation and it has completely killed my work laptop (which is modestly specced). Everything takes twice as long, resource hugging pile of shite.

We're moving away from it due to a know - but unfixed for years - intermittent incompatibility between it and our VPN software

They're all the same. At least 3 years old, was part of a stunning badly negotiated long term IT contract (which when signed didn't even have provision for remote working/laptops.). I'll complain if it continues though, for all the good it will do me!

Windows Defender which comes with the Signature edition of Windows. Any good? I’ve also obtained a key for Kaplinsky.

Just use the one in windows, there's no point farting around with anything else at this stage. Kaspersky is better but it's so marginal it's not worth worrying about.
