If there's a register, they'll be keeping it somewhere, and you'll be on it. You just have to insist that they dig it out.

Oh right, tutorials. Yeah, it's the same deal here.

My attendance was dreadful, but I was paying and it was therefore my choice. I don't see how the university has any right to kick you out for that - it's not the same as school.

This doesn't make any sense. How could he be saying that you weren't there? How does he know?

Ask him how he knows you weren't there.

The module was split into lectures and tutorials, so I only seen him once every week. But my other tutor (who doesn't come across as a smug cunt) could definitely confirm I went to every tutorial.
So... why is the smug tutor not consulting the other tutor about it?

I'm sorry, but this sounds very, very strange.

I feel your pain, anyway - I nearly got banned from graduating because I (unknowingly) owed the university a full year's worth of back rent on my flat due to them having fucked up my direct debit arrangement.

I've never quite understood the need for attendance checks at uni. If I spend a huge amount of money to register, but don't attend classes, take notes, do course work etc, I'll probably fail and not get that degree. As long as they get their money why should they care?

A piece of this puzzle is missing.

Can I just ask, and sorry if this is a bit cunty, but is there a key bit of info you’re not telling us? For example - you actually didn’t go and just got your mate to sign the register.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 12:31:02
Heh, I was more cunty :)

    Pass quotas.

I honestly don't know. He's a very hard person to track down. He's always talking to someone in his office or taking a class, so I'm guessing he's not had time.

Man, I'm so pissed off right now. Was just arguing with somebody on the help desk. They basically said I can't do anything. Wow, thanks for the help, help desk!

Yeah, there's something here that's not been accounted for. University's are notoriously badly organised so quite possible they fucked up, but I still find it hard to believe they'd kick you off for attendance.

Nope. I swear I went to every class. They all started in the morning as well! I was one of them students that came early to classes.

    Pass quotas.

Is that true? It wasn’t something I was aware of at the time. My BA every single person on the course passed with at least a 2:2.

I'm willing to bet that a few people in your year dropped out or were kicked out. The more prestigious their reputation the more this will be an issue.

Did you punch the guy in the eye when he questioned your attendance record?

No, but there's still time for that. :p

When/if this gets sorted out I would bring down a shit storm on this tutor, make sure he at least gives you a written apology in a glass frame.

Nah, pass quotas don't exist at unis. If anything unis want you to keep at it. More money for them. The ones who do get dropped really are shit.

Is attendance even mandatory at your uni? There are two things you can get thrown out of my uni for (aside from burning it down). 1) Doing really poorly and 2) Plagiarism. Number 2) is viewed as worse than committing genocide.

When your attendence is low they usually give you a warning... weird.

I assumed they kicked people out so they could have spots for people who actually want to be on the course.

My tutor was pretty candid about the workings of my uni, she didn't give the impression that these sorts of practises were confined to just mine.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 12:42:14
First thing I would do is track down this other tutor, even if it means waiting outside his class to grab him when he comes out.

I really think you need to go there rather than try and sort this on the phone. I’d literally spend a day just going around the various people that might be able to help you – union, the bursar, the head of department etc etc. You need to be pro-active.

I’d also approach it from a very matter-of-fact angle – “There’s been an administrative error which I need correcting” kind of thing, as opposed to ”I’ve failed my degree but it’s not fair”.

Actually go to the offices physically and demand to see someone about it. Don't dilly dally on this internet forum, it's midday! Do it now!
