What Kalel said, but I can't see how also threatening fraud actions will do anything other than speed up resolution.

Considering some of the lecturers I've had in the past are fucking awful and worse than reading a dry article, mandatory attendance is a stupid idea in my view. I attained most courses on my undergrad, but there were a few where the profs were so fucking dull I just couldn't stand to be there. The literature always covers what's in lectures and then some.

First thing I would do is track down this other tutor, even if it means waiting outside his class to grab him when he comes out.

I really think you need to go there rather than try and sort this on the phone. I’d literally spend a day just going around the various people that might be able to help you – union, the bursar, the head of department etc etc. You need to be pro-active.

I’d also approach it from a very matter-of-fact angle – “There’s been an administrative error which I need correcting” kind of thing, as opposed to ”I’ve failed my degree but it’s not fair”.

Yeah. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to spend the whole day tomorrow trying to get this mess sorted out. I haven't been sitting at home and phoning/emailing them btw. I have been in five or six times trying to sort it out.

Surreal. I went to maybe 1 in 10 of my lectures and as long as I was completing my coursework I never had any major issues.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 12:49:13
My college had *attendance* quota, hence had a register (that they quite often fraudulently filled in for people that were not attending), that had bearing on how much they got given the next FY.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 12:49:38
I think the whole mandatory attendance thing depends on the degree. My BA had a practical side to it which was assessed in tutorials.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 12:49:54
heh, just got an email from an advisor I've been talking to. He told me that I missed over 40% of the lectures, which is absolutely impossible. I've asked him for specific dates and to see the register in person.

Got them by the balls now.

I killed my tutors dog. He's blind, so that really put a damper on his day, but he doesn't even know it was me :)

Seriously, all the best on your battle match tomorrow. Don't take no for an answer, you're a victim and victims don't deserve this kind of stuff. Heck, if this happened in my hometown it'd literally be front page of the local paper, and that's not an exageration. If they don't have the registers to proove you were there, they also don't have the registers to proove you weren't, so ask on what basis they kept your attendance.

You've already got them by the balls anyway, rip them off and throw them!

I have a feeling that this is not going to end well.

    Hope it does, though.

Advisor's reply to my request for specific dates:

Sorry, I don’t have access to those records. I have to rely on the school to inform me of information like that.

    Regards

you're in trouble now, Fawkes. Did nobody tell you about Eurogamer.braille? It's all part of Rauper's insan- err perfectly reasonable and well-thought-through plan to rule the world.

    "Dear Sir,

The next obivous question then is who in the school gave you this incorrect information. Surely you can see I was going to ask this? If you've not got that sort of common sense then no wonder I've been booted for no reason and this'll take twice as long to fix.

    Yours,

    P_I"

I might not add that last bit.

Then the lazy sod should get onto the school to provide it to him, then.

Not good enough, I'd be going apeshit at this point if it was my degree on the line.

I've never quite understood the need for attendance checks at uni. If I spend a huge amount of money to register, but don't attend classes, take notes, do course work etc, I'll probably fail and not get that degree. As long as they get their money why should they care?
    Pass quotas.

Is that true? It wasn’t something I was aware of at the time. My BA every single person on the course passed with at least a 2:2.
An ex of mine was told she couldn't take one of her exams because the university decided they didn't feel she was up for taking it. (Translation: They didn't want a smear on their records). A friendly tutor backed her up and told the panel they were fucking idiots and they allowed her to take the exam. She got an A and passed her course with a 2:1.

    Universities: Shit.

Then tell him he's making an accusation against you of something he's admitting to having no proof whatsoever of, and official complaint will be made against him and records of all correspondence will be sent to all relevant university heads.

Just politely explain this it is not acceptable that you should be kicked out over an administrative error on their part. I’m sure he’ll understand and agree, I very much doubt there’s a conspiracy they’re all in on, it’s just that someone has fucked up.

Also as a general rule, whenever anyone puts up a wall like he has, ask politely to discuss it with his boss.

Don't they usually hand out warnings before booting you? In that case, you should think it'd be as easy as asking them to procure copies of those warnings, or let you back in.

    /probably isn't as easy

If he's a cock what difference does that make? I'm sure he's more worried about his job security and possible discipline action than about the welfare of one of his hundreds of students.

Going apeshit can work out well if you have a flair for it - but wait until it's undeniably justified.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2009 13:02:50
Got another reply. He's told me to go and speak to my main tutor (the tutor who withdrawn me). Ugh, I hate that guy.

He's just talking to some advisor though, not his tutor.

Surely it's up to them to provide proof of your absence in such a situation, your tutor should be looking after your best interests in such a situation.

I wasn't suggesting P_I went apeshit at anyone, I meant more that I'd be ranting and raging in the privacy of my home. Then I'd calm down and sort it out.

I'd say you need to go and speak to the course administrator not the tutors.
They'll have all the relevant records, the tutors will have had to give the some evidence of non-attendance.
