There's a 200+Mb demo on Xbox Marketplace for anyone interested. Let's you mess with the battles and all sorts.

I tried the demo last night and it was quite boring. Hopefuly the full game will be better as I like the look of it.

Yarp, that's what I heard to. Also has the hardest boss in the game.

It's a pointless demo, really. The only reason you'd want to play it is to have a look at the battle system, and the demo utterly fails to explain how it works.

My thoughts exactly. The only Tales game I've played was on the PSP but only for a short while. There is no expalaination on the battle system at all and the boss killed all my characters in about 30 seconds.

It's up 400% at Amazon today so the demo seems to have helped.

Looking forward to this more than anything since FFXII, which was a let down (vastly improved gameplay, shit characters/story. I don't play JRPGs for the gameplay GOdDAMNit!)
  • Deleted user 17 May 2009 00:09:24
Didn't enjoy the demo either, but demos of JRPGs are quite an odd concept when you stop to think about it. If the final game is as good as the Gamecube Tales game, that's good enough for me.

Least I wasn't the only one that experienced that.

Have to see what the reviews say before picking this up I think.

Is the demo the same one that was on a demo disc with Xbox 360 magazine last year (along with Too Human) or is it another one?

Just another message regarding the demo - it does a pathetic job at actually demonstrating the game. It shows the battle system with no introduction, it doesn't spend any time giving you any idea of the characters and it is a section of the game which is very graphically unimpressive compared to even the early parts of the full game. Seriously, the first two hours of the game would have been a million times better.

Agree with the other points here - a lousy demo. I'll be waiting for reviews too but I wish they'd put a bit more effort into this demo and some rudimentary tutorial at least. Seems a waste of time releasing this gash. (except +400% sales can't be wrong)

I look forward to seeing what Vesperia does better than Star Ocean 4. :)

Pretty much everything, except 'holding B until a cursor changes colour then flicking the analogue stick left.'

Didn't know this game was out. Was holding for a good RPG to arrive on the 360 after the disappointments of Star Ocean 4, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery and Lost Odyssey but having just bought Overlord II I think I'll wait for the EG review before ordering. I don't think I could stomach another lacklustre 360 RPG.

Although the demo was OK, it reminded me a lot of Eternal Sonata which I liked a lot, it didn't do a very good job of explaining the gameplay at all. As such I'm a bit undecided on the game. If it's like Eternal Sonata then it's a must buy. If it's like any of those games mentioned in the first paragraph then I'll give a miss!

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't re-reviewed Darren, from what I've read its essentially the American version but just 10 months late. It got an 8 from EG though when they reviewed the American one :)

@boabg - I hated it, sorry. It was boring and just when it started getting picking up at the 12 hour mark I found I just lost all interest in it. The fact that it had annoying random battles didn't endear me to it either, they're a relic from the 20th century IMO and should be left there! :p

Oh I didn't realise they'd already reviewed it. I'd check it out. Thanks.

Randon battles are half the fun of the genre!

@boabg - Not for me they're not! Hate 'em.

Even back in the Dreamcast days, stuff like Grandia II was impressing the hell out of me because they were huge, addictive RPGs that didn't require random battles. In fact, Grandia II is my favourite JRPG to date.

Fuck random encounters. It's like some annoying bastard continually talking to you when you're trying to read. Also, if this is anyone's first "Tales of" game, don't be discouraged if you intially find the combat too manic. It'll get easier to manage.

I've just read the review, sounds great. I guess I must be getting old though because I don't recall reading it yet I've actually posted comments in the review! Oh dear... senile dementia is a terrible thing... I think... I forget! :(
