A quick question, what OS do they supply them with, i've just picked up a 14" 900mhz iBook (256mb 46GB combo drive) from the store and was just wondering if they rebuild them with the latest OS or whatever was on the machine when they had it returned. Also any good sites out there for apple news and newbies (haven't touched a mac in a long long time) *hits send receive rapidly whilst waiting for shipment confirmation email* |
For those of you who have bought refurb apple laptops

edit: BTW, they were very quick with me, the laptop was delivered the Monday after I'd ordered it.

Registered 20 years agoWhen I was looking into that option I think I read they all come with whatever the latest build of the OS is at the time of shipping.
I get the feeling from what I was told that you'll want to strip out that 128MB expansion stick and get yourself something more signficant (I've had no problems with the extra 512MB stick in this 800MHz 12" equivalent model).
I'd really advise looking through pervious threads for suggestions for must have software. A lot of what is recomended is free (except for big things like Office which can be picked us in the *ahem* usual places) and really takes the strong default package that comes with OS X and gives you just about everything you'll need. -

Registered 20 years agoAssuming you're going to have your iBoook with you I'm bringing the iBook and thanks to the way 99% of apps work for OS X it is a simple matter of copying the directory from my apps folder to yours to give you a copy (not sure if you'll end up with any personal setting as well with that method but I haven't got many installers left). You got a WiFi card with that or will we need to crossover cable them together?
I'm not overflowing with software but I think I've got most of the essentials covered and a few perks (fallout series, great for the rather weak GPU in the iBook) -

Registered 19 years agoThanks for the replies, I've already made the trip to the *usual places* for a few apps. They say it should be ready for delivery on or before the 23rd of next week, getting it delivered to work so no worries about missing some postie who knocks like a fairy.
Shivoa how does the 800 hold up for gaming, i'm not expecting it to do anything serious but a couple of real time strategy games and some roms would do me fine.
Memory will have to wait for a bit unless i can find a so-dimm in an old laptop at work. Wireless networking is the first thing I want to add to it since i've a 54G access point sat here for 6 months doing nothing. -

Registered 20 years agoThe WiFi range is very nice from my experiments. I haven't really pushed my iBook as I've always had a PC to play games near me and on to go I prefer something like a RPG. THPS4 that came with it doesn't play that badly. There is actually a wide range of title ported to Mac to enjoy if you can find copies.
Edit: Not sure if my switch will want crossover cables for connections as I've only ever tried it with straight ones and it is a cheap unbranded one so probably isn't the best for odd stuff like that.

bit late here, but when i spoke to the apple store about this (just after panther was released and i was thinking of picking up a 17" powerbook) i was told that they'd ship it with whatever it was built with originally, but based on shinji's experience this may have changed.

Registered 19 years agoWell laptop showed up at 9am with an added 512mb of RAM and a 60GB HD which weren't in its original spec. Has to be said it's rather nice, just need to nip out at lunch for a airport card.

Spent a good hour in John Lewis looking over the G5 desktops and portable range. Even gave some toffs some comments on the Apple stuff. They were dead impressed I think. -

Registered 19 years agoGah microanvika in selfridges is shut for a refit which means no airport card for me unless anyone knows where i can pick one up in Manchester town center.
Holds down shift.....oooooooh.
So far managed to boot it and upgrade to panther which was painless even if it did take some time (japanese languages ffs)
Unfortunately got a new department to setup today so I can't play with it as much as I would like.
Does the system optimise system performance after each installation ? I assume that it's defragging or something similar. -

Yeah, it'll do so. But you can use the Disk utility in the Utility folder to check/repair permissions. Always worth doing and only take 5 mins or so. -

Congrats Ste. .gif)
Incidentally, looks like I was too quick to recommend MacNN, one of the wanky moderators over there locked a thread I was using to try and figure out this problem I've been having with OSX hanging and then launching iChat. Tosser.
God I hate over-moderated forums! -

Well if you'd put the thread in the right place it wouldn't have been locked...

Going to be setting up the in-laws' new eMac this weekend. They're leaving it in the box for me to unwrap - bless! The extra RAM from Crucial has already arrived, so just the iSight to get. They ordered BB from Pipex on Friday so I hope they're prompt in setting up the line and delivering the gubbins.
WOPR - I'm about to spend half an hour in Terminal 4 gazing at digital cameras - which one were you pimping again, and how much?
