Steams ok I guess, the real issue is pricing for new titles and the fact that retail patches tend to come out first and for Steam version you have to wait a while.

Argh I'm having a huge problem with Steam! Got the day off today so thought I'd do a bit of gaming. Tried Portal last night but it needed a massive update, so I cancelled it as didn't have the time.

My problem today is Steam won't even let me in. It says it can't connect to the internet with a pop up and then closes. The thing is my internet is fine as I'm on it right now. Also I thought they fixed the having to be online thing. Is this something to do with cancelling the update last night? Is there a way around it? I've about had it with Steam but still want to get these games finished.

It's now mid day and still not got any gaming done!

The offline thing works if you try offline mode once on that computer while online. Something weird like that.

Are you running anything that might block Steam?
  • Deleted user 18 October 2013 12:12:47
If you cancel updating Steam itself then you'll likely have issues, if you only stopped the game update then that wouldn't affect Steam.

You can go into offline mode but you need to sign in first. If you get back in then I suggest you stop any updates and then go into offline and boot the game.

I never really had any issues but then yesterday within the space of an hour I discovered that the latest patch had deleted all of my Batman saves and then when I tried to play Max Payne 3 instead it just locked on the title screen due to an issue with the social club interaction.

Still a really good service on the whole though.

Fixed it with a reinstall of Steam. Not sure what was causing it since I hadn't changed anything with the computer. Must have shut down badly last time.

Anyway I still have a problem with these game updates. Only just learned from this thread you can stop them from getting updates, but it still seems to be insisting that these updates finish to play. I don't really have the bandwidth for all this (yeah I know, need to upgrade) so is there any way to cancel the updates? They're currently paused but games won't launch.

If you right click the game in the library is there an option there to cancel an update? If not, I'm afraid you're stuck.

@TheSaint My Batman saves had disappeared as well, but I suppose it might be because the awesome Games for ****ing Windows. I haven't played Batman in six months, but I'm not gonna tinker with Games for windows settings as I'm fearing the same would happen to my Dark Souls saves...

GFWL got patched out of Batman as MS is killing it off. Losing saves is part of the process unfortunately.

Yeah there is the option and clicked it but still insisting I complete the current update. Fortunately Dark Souls is one of the few games without an update paused, so that's something.

Edit again: Dark Souls has a GFWL update!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's annoying, but it makes sense imo. I think you're telling Steam that way that no other computer can access your games in the meantime. I mean, otherwise you could just log in on all the computers of your friends and set it to offline mode, so they could all play for free.

One thing I hate about Steam is the browser. It's fucking rubbish and hasn't really changed since it launched. I mean, it's not 1996 anymore. Is it really necessary that I have to use another browser to browse games?

    This thread will do.
First off, I like Steam, changed the way we play games on pc, awesome.
But I got an alright pc and fast internet, still, Steam takes 17 seconds to load up.
Not really complaining but wtf is it doing in those 17 seconds? I mean it has to do some authentication and then check file integrity is suppose.

Yes, samsung evo 850. I copied a folder of random files and I get 5GB in 17 seconds.
Fast internet too, 15ms ping, 192Mb/s - 24MB/s download speed in Steam.

Let's say you load up Steam once a day, that's:

    17 * 365 = 6205 seconds/year

Let's say you have 50 good years left:

    50 * 6205 = 310250 seconds = 5170 minutes = 86 hours = 3.5 days!

Jesus, over 3 days of your life literally waiting for Steam!?!?!

That’s not the point of my question though. It’s more like it’s the only thing on this pc that takes so “long” to load up, and that’s including windows.

I think even the most ardent Steam fan agrees that the software needs some major overhaul. They've been using the same client since what, 2006?

Steam could be massively improved by removing the forums.

Only issue I have with steam is some odd bug that causes it to hang on startup. On all my laptop's it starts when windows does as expected.

On my main pc where it loads from SSD the bootloader hangs and I have to kill it via task manager and restart. I changed the service to delayed start as that was the only fix I could find but that's done fuck all. Reinstall didnt fix it either.

17 second? Screw that, it takes my ageing PC about 5 minutes! Doing other stuff doesn't seem to slow it down though so I just piss about on Eurogamer and check my e-mails.

No, they upgraded it about 6 years ago to use webkit over that boxy thing it was when it launched.

    @crashVoodoo Use the beta version instead. Steam> Settings> Account> Beta participation> ???> Profit.

@SpaceMonkey77 those big game boxes were great. And the last post in this thread that said Steam sucks was at least 4 years ago.

@Dirtbox interesting. I'll try it when I get home. Thanks
