I hope it's not just a rehashed New Reno. Because that section suffered more than most from F2's pop culture references and slightly skewy tone. |

Harsh!
Anyway - lurved FO3 and am hard for this. Hopefully I'll have finished the FO3 DLC by the time it's released... -

I think there will be a Mafia presence in this due to the shallow graves at the start. I'm also thinking New Vegas will be a warped rebuild of the old Las Vegas. Similar to Bartertown in Mad Max 3.
If it is it should serve as an interesting mix of moral dilemmas for the player. Especially if the Brotherhood are on the prowl as well with their quest to hoover up all technology. -

I thought Fallout 3 was good, definitely gets more praise than it deserves. I think some people place too much value on the mindless exploration.. Personally, I'd take something more linear but with actual focus and narative like Mass Effect over it any day.
But it's not quite approaching the same level as Oblivion, which gets a ridiculous amount of praise despite being completely inferior to its predecessor in almost every way. (the few improvements it did make all came from it just having more advanced technology) -

Registered 16 years agoA linear Fallout just wouldn't work. The whole point of the sprawling wasteland is that you can run into anything. If they has this tech back in 1998 I'm pretty sure the originals would have had the exploration of F3. -

No it'll be because he's being a antaganistic trolling twat whose posting about a game he doesn't even like, prob in a 2 year old thread if it's not the the equivalent of this one over there.
You've obviously not seen him post much in the last few months. Go check the ME2 thread if you want to get what I mean. -

Come on now, 'shit' is overly harsh. Personally I loved Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2 although I can see why some people may resent the praise they received. However, calling either of them 'shit' is just utterly ridiculous. -

No they wouldn't. There is limited exploration in the first 2 but it's directed. The Vault dweller only ventures out across the dangerous wastes to get to a specific goal. You can explore if you want but there are only angry dogs and rad scorpions, so the tech was partially there.
Fallout 1+2 were far more tightly scripted and focused.
"Personally, I'd take something more linear but with actual focus and narative like Mass Effect over it any day." Also describes the original Fallouts, as they were Black Isle games! They didn't just dump you in big pointless sand boxes. -

I got Fallout 3 for £16, for the money, I thought it was a fantastic game. Well worth every penny. It was one of those games, I found, that the awesome factor started to lessen the more the game went on. Kind of went downhill when my character hit Level 14 onwards.
Like the sound of Hardcore mode! -

Registered 16 years agoYeah got my PCG through the post this morning. The New Vegas article is nice and long, only skimmed it so far but all the pertinent points are in Ecosse's post. Sounds like it may turn Fallout 3 from "hmm" to "hmm!!" - definitely worth picking up PCG on your lunch break next week for a proper read. -

Registered 14 years agoSounds great. I found Fallout3 to be more enjoyable when watching someone else play through it. The idea of having to 'survive' sounds great, reminiscent of an old Amiga game i had (the name escapes me) where you crash landed on this planet and had to create splints, drink, make a camp etc. -

Registered 17 years agoYeah. As I said in the FO3 thread a while ago, a lot of the problems I had with the game were minor, and could be quite easily addressed with mods or somesuch. But I was playing the 360 version, so that was impossible.
Hardcore mode seems much more similar to the original games. Except for the water drinking. -

Registered 16 years agoSounds amazing, ammo having weight is welcome. I always did feel a bit silly carrying hundreds of missles and thousands of bullets. Wonder if it'll have different ammo types too. -

apparently Obsidian hired an Oblivion modder that made quite substantial balance changes to the game just via mods.
They hired Oscuro, I believe, of Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul fame. -
Interesting. OOO was quite some mod, but I tended to go for Francesco's Mod instead as I felt OOO changed TOO much. -

All great changes.
There is an optional hardcore mode, the character needs to drink water, ammo has weight, healing isn’t instant etc. Normal mode is more similar to Fallout 3 gameplay.
Skils have a bigger effect on conversation choices. E.g. someone with a high Explosives skill may be able to have a conversation about explosives where appropriate.
There is a Reputation system in addition to Karma. -
Wow, that is one impressive change list. Glad to see another big developer who actually listens to their fanbase. The (western) RPG future is looking very bright indeed

Any word on how they've fixed VATS?
